Civil War Veteran H. W. James Dies at 83 Near Graham
H. W. James, a Civil War veteran born in Concord Delaware on September 11, 1840, died early Wednesday November 28 at the home of J. A. Wright west of Graham. He served in the Southern army under General Early and was reportedly disowned by his northern family. James, who never married, formed a close bond with Wright after meeting in 1899 in Alaska. Wright cared for him in Washington State for two years as his health declined. Funeral services were held at Median Chapel with Rev. P. E. Cantrell officiating. James was described as a Mason and a Christian and well loved by the community.
