Two coal mines remained in operation to fuel power companies as West Virginia miners pressed a third day of protest over pensions and welfare. Police Officer Severely Beaten In Arrest Attempt
State Police corporal Cpl. L. H. Powell of the Moundsville detachment was hospitalized in Glendale in serious condition after being beaten while attempting to arrest a suspect. Powell and Moundsville officers had set up a roadblock in South Moundsville around 6 p.m. yesterday following information that bandits who robbed a New Martinsville jewelry store were headed that way by car. Police said the robbery was foiled by neighborhood residents and the suspects fled.
