Fund shortage uncovered in Preston county tax accounts
Charleston Sept 14 The auditor's office asked Attorney General C W Meadows to sue two surety firms for 1722 dollars after a shortage found in the accounts of five Preston county assessors. J D Browning died in 1935 and his wife Effie Browning, who succeeded him and also died, are tied to the overpayment dispute. The audit shows 3522 dollars in capitation tax collected but only 1800 paid to the state. Browning issued a 740 dollar check before death, later covered by Mrs Browning with another personal check. The sureties dispute who gets credit for the 740 dollars.

Funeral rites were held at 2 o'clock in Clemtown church for Charles Lee Weaver nine of Arden who died from injuries in a Sunday automobile crash on Bounce road near Philippi. He was born September 4 1928 and is survived by his parents Harold and Dorothy Weaver and a sister Constance. The Rev Durward Brown will conduct the service and interment is in Clemtown cemetery. The cause of the accident is undetermined.
