Russian Maj Gen Alexander Kotikov rejected Western protests and warned Americans to mind their own business while German crowds hissed at Soviet attempts to seize power near the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate.

In Atlantic City on September 9, Dorothy Free from Tennessee led the talent portion and Vera Baleston of Kansas topped the beauty segment as the pageant began naming the nation's top Miss America. A crowd of about 10,000 watched the preliminary event with Tennessee in a rhinestone black crepe gown and Kansas in a bathing suit.
U S Senator Chapman Revercomb and Rep Melvin Snyder spoke at Morgantown opening ceremonies for a new lock and dam on the Monongahela. The project deepens the river channel to over nine feet, boosting coal production and regional jobs. The $3,000,000 effort advances barges to full capacity and speeds towboat traffic.

Allen, 51, a State commerce department radio publicity employee. Smith was arrested at Fort Dix after a four day probe into Allen’s nude body found in a hotel room with a twisted noose. Authorities say the device tightened with any movement.
Charleston dispatch reports Republican women of West Virginia will launch an organized campaign mid September. Mrs Chauncey Hinerman of Cameron will direct the women’s division from state headquarters in Charleston and visit districts to speak at rallies as part of the GOP campaign.
Russia proposed foreign ministers from the big four meet in Paris to decide Italy’s prewar colonies. A British Foreign Office spokesman could not confirm feasibility on short notice. No immediate reaction from the U S state department. France lacks a government complicating unity among Britain France and the United States. If consensus is reached, five days remain to resolve the unsettled issue. See Italians page 3.
A radio appeal from volcanologist Arturo Alcaraz urged ships to rescue as Mt Hihokhibuls on Camiguin Island spewed acidic ash. Since Sept 1 the eruption reduced thousands on the Mindanao coast towns like Guinsiliban and Binone. A new outbreak prompted cease of ashfall risk and evacuation efforts.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey won the endorsement of the executive board of the Building Service Employees International Union, representing about 175,000 members, as he campaigns for the presidency. The endorsement was announced by William L. McFetridge after talks with Dewey in Albany. It marks the first outright union endorsement for Dewey, while AFL leaders in other groups back Truman.

Atlanta dispatch reports Herman Talmadge won Georgia's Democratic primary with about 271,615 votes to 241,005 and a county unit margin of 316 to 88. Gov. M. E. Thompson conceded after 20 months of power struggle as Talmadge aims to assume office in November, promising a swift special session. The report frames the outcome as the rise of a political dynasty and the prospect of renewed white supremacy influence in Georgia politics.
President Truman announced a two week western campaign tour starting September 17 with a speech in Dexter and visits planned for San Francisco Los Angeles Denver Colorado Springs Colorado Salt Lake City and possibly San Diego He will return to Washington around October 1 and will include stops in Denver and Glenwood Springs as part of the tour.
Seattle police recount a Fort Monmouth trained teen in inviting friends to a family home that spiraled into a party attracting about 400 teens. Cars clogged curbs, food vanished including canned soups and frozen meat. Mother Mabel Champion waited 15 minutes to enter.
Registration for the peace time draft reached its halfway point with 1205 men from Taylor and Barbour counties registered. Taylor counted 612 by last evening, Barbour 693, with Barbour’s first daily total released at 31 and 62 the previous day. The local board is based in the Grafton Bank and Trust building.
Three Rosemont men Robert Morris Earnest Bolton and Steve Swirgle in their early twenties were held today for action by Taylor County Circuit Court grand jury at a preliminary hearing before May. Each posted 500 bond for release from custody. Whether their case goes to the September grand jury could not be learned today. The trio were arrested.
Charle sten Sept 9 Marman Marmet children Tommy Deel age 5 and Frankie Deel age 3 were bitten by snakes while walking home in the dark. Both boys were bitten on the foot, treated at the state hospital, immunization given, and listed in good condition.
AFL official David Dubinsky reports President Truman told reporters the United States will not be pushed out of Berlin. Truman said the U S will stand up for its rights while seeking a settlement with Russia. He declined to detail negotiations but affirmed refusal to negotiate under duress.
Two men received minor injuries and about 2800 dollars in property damage after a head on collision on U S Route 50 one mile west of Pruntytown yesterday morning. Frank Laurie 25 of Clarksburg driver of a 1942 International truck owned by Anderson Inc was hospitalized and charged with hazardous driving. Norman Reynold Kittle 20 of Valley Bend drove a 1948 Dodge and escaped with minor scrapes. State Trooper E L Duckworth said Laurie attempting to pass Kittle caused the crash.
State police said two highway accident fatalities occurred in separate incidents. Amedo Angeletti, 52, was fatally injured on State Route 3 in Raleigh County, and William Ellsworth Sheets, 20, died in Wheeling. The tenth death so far this year, totaling 12, compared with 11 at the same time last year.
