Nuernberg Mayor Otto Ziebill will protest to U S authorities over reported abuses by occupation troops. He cites 83 civilians molested or beaten in recent months and notes German women avoid streets after five pm. City officials support a formal protest and cite night-shift physicians being harassed.
In a Brooklyn hospital ward a magistrate reduced the charges against Harley Kilgore Jr after a disturbance at his home. Kilgore, a former wartime army captain, has been confined in Kings County Hospital since his arrest on October 1 for felonious assault and violation of the Sullivan Act weapons law.
Tokyo reported Japan will not reduce export prices or dump goods on the world market. Minister Heitaro Inagaki emphatically denied any return to prewar price cutting or trade practices. General McArthur’s floor-price elimination unsettles foreign trade centers amid concern of price slashing to boost sales. Floor prices set by Allied HQ remain the floor for Japanese exports.
A light private airplane crashed after takeoff at a Canvas field in Nicholas county. Pilot Samson R. Ross, 29, of Fenwick, escaped serious injury. Passenger Robert Dale Spencer, 27, of Richwood, suffered internal injuries and lacerations.
Washington officials gave divergent versions of President Truman’s approach to the coal and steel disputes. One cabinet aide said the president will intervene if strikes aren’t settled by week’s end, another said Truman still seeks voluntary settlements. Cyrus Ching mediating as Murray discusses weekly talks with U.S. Steel and CIO Steelworkers.
Paul C. Hoffman, economic cooperation administrator, urged Western Europe to form a single market of nations west of the Soviet Iron Curtain to achieve financial self sufficiency under the Marshall Plan. Speaking to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Montreal, he warned Europe will need $4,000,000,000 more in imports than it earns this year.
Belgrade reports Tito pledging to resist Moscow backed efforts to dominate Yugoslavia. He framed the struggle as for a great just cause with historic significance, amid a Moscow accusation over diamonds given to opera singer Zinka Milanov. Milanov called the claim silly and Tito vowed continued opposition.
The Grafton City Hospital board will hold its monthly session tonight at 7 30 p m at the hospital. Clyde N Mays, president, will preside over the meeting.
Violence erupts in Taylor county mines as 10 to 14 carloads of pickets damage equipment and cars totaling over 250 dollars. Wrecks include a coal car, gas tank, windows on a nine ton truck, torn records, and damaged scales. Police arrived as pickets departed via a back road. Last Friday 30 carloads of pickets, many colored, targeted the Mason Brothers strip at Pruntytown. Mason persuaded them to leave but threats were made. See Picket page 2.
Taylor county schools and the Grafton City hospital report no fuel shortage risk during the 38 day coal strike. Hospital head A J Williamson says about three weeks of coal on hand and ongoing secure supply. Superintendent R Virgil Rohrbough says school bins were filled to capacity last spring and current stocks should last until Christmas. Flemington High nearly depleted but replenished. Homeowners have obtained coal from non union diggers and strippers with no real fuel fear for the city.
Mrs A A Harold of Beckley named treasurer of the West Virginia Women's Temperance Union at the 66th annual convention. All other officers were re-elected led by Mrs A L Rohrer Beckley president and Mrs Louise Gabriel Parkersburg vice president with Mrs Virginia F Mason Grafton corresponding secretary and Mrs Audrey Keys Clarksburg secretary.
Beckley juvenile court will hear a 12 year old boy charged with murder in the fatal shooting of his six year old nephew Jackie Clay at the home of the younger boy’s grandfather in Naoma Raleigh County.
At Pearl Harbor on November 7 the Pacific fleet will launch 000-pound guided missiles from Cusk and Carbonero to test subma rine delivery of atomic heads. The electronically guided missiles have a 100 to 200 mile range and mark a significant advance in sea power. Cmdr John S McCain Jr says submarines with guided missiles become siege bombardment weapons and move toward push-button warfare.
In Huntington a circuit court award favors Sammons Brothers Construction Co of Logan for Logan County strip mining work in 1947-48. The $61,833 judgment is against Elk Creek Coal Co, which asked to set aside the verdict. Special Judge Ernest E. Winters will rule on the motion. The claim alleged scales misweighed coal and $100,000 worth was mined and loaded beyond payment.
The West Virginia Women's Christian Temperance Union ends its 66th convention with the annual dinner tonight in Martinsburg. National WCTU speaker Mrs. D Leigh Colvin of Evansville Illinois will headline. About 65 delegates attend, hearing recommendations for a membership drive and for the legislature to study liquor tax costs. Mrs Burl Mason of Grafton, a past state secretary, also attends.
Eight inmates escaped from the New Castle county prison taking guns and ammo after overpowering guards and breaching a gate. A life term leader, 18, led the breakout as guards fired, with five prisoners reportedly boarding a Reading bound freight. Two others forced a clerk to drive them away before abandoning the car in Kennet Square. State police set roadblocks and alerted neighboring states as a nationwide manhunt began for the dangerous escapees.
Ford wins union approval for a first in the industry pension plan worth 100 dollars monthly for 115,000 production workers. The company funds about 30 million annually, part of a 10 year package aligning with Truman commission ideas and easing auto industry tensions.
White House says President Truman has not set a mediation deadline and is keeping hands off for now. Charles G. Ross notes reports claiming he planned to intervene if strikes are not settled by the weekend are without warrant. Ross also says Truman has not discussed the strike situation individually with any cabinet member.
Striking steelworkers mailed mimeographed letters to upper Ohio valley business and professional groups asking for financial support. Frank Cisar of CIO United Steelworkers District 23 called the appeal necessary due to the steel industry’s stance on the presidential fact finding board report. A United Mine Workers spokesman said his group has no public appeal plan and will rely on county officials for aid to the needy.
William Alfred Blackford of Coal Run Ohio faced a murder trial in Harrisville as state testimony closed. His sister Cleopatra Cunningham, 62, was shot dead at her Pennsboro area home on July 23. A state witness suggested a possible motive tied to a disputed title.
Sigmund Sam Engel a 73 year old Chicago roving romeo accused of swindling women erupted in court cursing prosecutors and police as jurors prepared to hear his case. Judge George M. Fisher had just concluded testimony before the outburst.
Twenty men from the Valley Head and Monterville areas of Randolph County were jailed on conspiracy to inflict bodily harm charges after allegedly forcing two truck drivers to dump coal along U.S. Route 33 between Elkins and Buckhannon. Drivers from Harman reported the incident. one dump truck was used and the other man was forced to shovel coal from his load. Bail of 500 dollars each was set. Preliminary hearing date not yet fixed.
City police joined a search for 15 year old Alvin Har Cremeans missing from Arbuckle near here since Monday. Authorities released few details and urged residents to report any information aiding the probe.
