The Sentinel reports a coal strike forcing the cancellation of about 600 coal-burning passenger trains. An Interstate Commerce Commission order required coal carriers with under 25 days of supply to cut passenger service by 25 percent. The reductions, effective from last midnight, are set to last up to two months unless reversed.
In Pennsylvania soft coal regions a steam shovel owned by Henry Kenner at Coupon was blown apart by dynamite. Weeks earlier a tipple at a deep mine also owned by Kenner was wrecked. The area had unionized activity with the United Mine Workers approving continued operation during a coal strike affecting local schools and colleges.
A twin engined plane from La Guardia Field New York City crashed into a hill near Port Deposit Maryland killing four aboard. Victims include H L Aus, wealthy horseman and president of the American Totalizator Company. Other victims identified by state police are A J Johnson Baltimore GM of the company Wally Mayer Palm Beach pilot and Betton R Osborne Palm Beach co pilot. The flight departed 5 p m EST yesterday. West Virginia to receive 162404 federal funds for game management this year said Conservationator C F McClintic.
Coal operators face a tight deadline as United Mine Workers push for a seven hour day a substantial wage rise and increased welfare fund contributions in a stalled strike talks with the Southern Coal Producers Association. A 20 cent per ton royalty to fund the welfare program is in place while current daily wage sits at 14 dollars 05 cents for an eight hour shift.
In a New York telegram Julius Empak secretary treasurer of the UK urged CIO President Philip Murray to meet Leftist United Electrical union representatives to resolve bitter internal differences before the CIO convention opening in Cleveland Monday. Murray had no immediate comment but noted the issue must be settled at the gathering.
Senator Edwin C. Johnson said the Army’s plan to discharge draftees proves the 1948 peace-time draft act was unnecessary. He cited Army and policy disclosures that 24,000 draftees and 6,000 21-month enlistees may receive discharges after 12 months of service, urging leadership to drop plans to extend the selective service act.

Ten diphtheria cases were reported for the week ending October 22 to the State Health Department. Logan county had five cases, McDowell four, and Putnam the remaining, with additional scarlet fever and polio tallies across several counties. Scarlet fever totaled 15 cases, four in Cabell county, and seven polio cases appeared in Monongalia with one in Barbour, Boone, Logan and Nicholas counties.
A 12 year old boy charged with murder was to be transferred today to Raleigh county juvenile authorities for a hearing. The charge followed a coroner s jury death in the home of his grandfather at Neoma Raleigh county. The case involves the death of duckie Clay 6 nephew of the accused youth.
A committee of five Grafton men issued checks totaling 2235.50 for shipments of a rare drug to date. The fund has 2776.55 deposited at First National Bank, not counting 191.70 from a Moose Lodge benefit dance, 45.50 from high school clubs, and about 250 mailed to the Kiger family, all awaiting final tallies.
Jack Edward Kirby of Route 4 was found guilty of failing to stop at the Routes 250 and 50 junction. He drove a 1937 sedan and was fined $10 plus costs in Magistrate Ona C Jefferys court this week, after arrest by State Trooper B L Duckworth.

He confirms the United States agreed to withdraw two diplomats and seeks to repatriate a third with no diplomatic status who was detained last Friday by the Czech government on spy allegations.
