The Sentinel reports Congress cleared a 1950 farm program with high price supports and production controls for major crops, while some noncontrolled products likely face reduced price guarantees. President Truman is expected to sign, with funding likely at wartime levels. The Senate and House votes were 46 to 7 and 175 to 34 respectively.
Charleston officials report Delegate William H. File Jr of Raleigh was named to the West Virginia Judicial Council by Speaker Patteson. He will serve the unexpired term of Huntington city attorney T W Huntington until May 9, 1950.
Two Huntington State Hospital inmates, 14 year old Jerry Riggs of Tallmansville and 19 year old Lawrence Bowles of Charleston, fled during a play period. They hotwired a parked 1947 sedan, attempted to flee toward Charleston, crashed into a bridge near Leon on Route 25, then fled on foot. State Trooper Robert C. Dilley arrested them and returned them to the hospital.
A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs J K Robb of Route 5 Grafton on October 19 at 11 18 am. The child weighed seven pounds fourteen and one half ounces at birth.
John C. Stout, chairman for the County PMA committee, stresses that former committeemen are the real strength of the Agricultural Conservation Program. He notes the program operates in every agricultural county and is active across Taylor County, with voting places listed on page 4.
Public Service Commission hearings in Grafton resumed at Taylor County Court House. The panel extended hearings into June for an audit of water system records. New rate schedules, planned to raise municipal water revenues by 2500 dollars annually, were suspended pending PSC decision.
In New York on October 20 Yugoslavia won the United Nations Security Council seat on the second secret-ballot vote by 39 to 19, defeating Soviet backed Czechoslovakia as India and Ecuador also secured the other two council seats to be vacated December 31.
Washington voters will be heard as Congress returns home for a 75 day recess to discuss how to run the country. After a 269 day Democratic controlled session, lawmakers left with unresolved issues and mixed acclaim. President Truman sent a congratulatory note to Speaker Rayburn and Vice President Barkley as the session closed amid occasional acrimony and a busy legislative period.
Pittsburgh report on twin steel and coal strikes threatening widespread layoffs. Major automakers Ford General Motors and Chrysler warn shutdowns could begin by mid November if walkouts persist, with GM and Chrysler feeling the impact by month end and Ford possibly by November 11. President Truman traces no immediate intervention.
Plain clothes police to patrol pre Halloween areas in Moundsville and other towns as pranks begin early. In Charleston the State Capitol glass was shot, and in Grafton pranksters have staged dangerous acts on roadways. At least 100 tires were flattened in a spate of activity last week. Authorities fear pranks could become deadly as Halloween approaches and plan supervised events to curb mischief.
A three story brick Hopkins Motors garage on 20th street Wheeling burned, leveling the building and destroying many cars. Hopkins estimated losses at around 200000 dollars, the structure valued at 100000. No injuries were reported as firefighters battled the blaze and kept it to the one structure.
President Truman stated today he will ask Congress to raise taxes at the upcoming session. He emphasized the need to fund government programs and balance the budget amid ongoing economic concerns.
Gen. Joe Collins testified before the House Armed Services Committee that the Army does not seek to diminish the Marine Corps. He rejected claims of an intent to impose Army will on a sister service and countered Navy Marine criticisms of defense policy bias toward the Air Force.
United Nations Assembly votes today in a tense contest between Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia for a Security Council seat. The USSR backed Czechoslovakia, while Yugoslavia enjoys American support. In Dalton Georgia a Navy small plane attempting an emergency landing on a dimly lit football field crashed into a cemetery last night. Two reserve officers were killed and a WAVE was seriously injured as volunteers pulled survivors from the burning wreck. Firemen reported near dry fuel tanks.
The coroner jury found Preston child died accidentally after being struck by an automobile driven by Marshall Barnett of Scotts Run. The eight year old Webster youth suffered a fractured skull while en route to City Hospital shortly after 4 30 p m Tuesday. Witness Edda Hoffman testified she saw the incident as she came down an embankment to Route 250.
Washington reports Senator Neely of West Virginia announced the appointment of Robert H. Mollohan of Fairmont as chief clerk of the Senate District committee.
The first snowfall of the season spread from western states toward midwest regions as cold air pushed east. Montana reported up to eight inches, Wyoming six inches, with lighter totals across Colorado, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Nebraska and the Dakotas. Three deaths due to cold and snow were recorded in Montana, Colorado and Wyoming.
Madison story reports 19 year old Drexil Barker and three Boone county men named Albert Britton 32 Delmer Webb 45 all of Nellia and Ridney Barker 30 of Brushton held on charges related to operating a still at Fork Creek. State Police Corporal Scott identified the group after their Sunday arrest.
