A 67 year old Grafton man, aided by a cane, fell onto the fender of a moving car during a heavy rainstorm on Main street at 7 15 pm. Albn Bennett of West Main street suffered a fractured right leg and deep facial and neck wounds. Driver A T Utsinger said he slowed to watch Bennett step from curb and that Bennett fell onto the fender. Witnesses corroborated. Police continued investigation.
The 1949 polio tally is projected to reach about 41000 by year end, Basil O Connor, head of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, announced. He said 33144 cases have occurred so far, the highest annual total on record, exceeding the prior 1838 epidemic peak. A Charleston item notes a West Virginia brush burning permit rule to start October 15 as forest fire season opens. In Welch, a McDowell County trial begins Monday for Robert Wade King and Roy Shirley, charged with robbing the First National Bank of Northfork of 20500 last July 30.
President Truman drives by car to a quiet weekend near Charlottesville Virginia hosted by Stanley Woodward and Mrs Woodward at Colle on Jefferson estate one mile from Monticello. Mrs. Martha Kalwalaic, a Virginia society girl and child psychology student, is acquitted in the May 12 death of her 16 month old son Henry. She remains in police custody and faces a psychiatric examination to assess safety. The verdict came after nearly four hours of jury deliberation.
Ranger reports the Air Force C-47 transport crashed in the Blue Ridge mountains near Mount Mitchell, killing all nine aboard. Wreckage found six miles from the parkway, burned and in timbered terrain. One victim crawled clear but died from burns. Rescue teams searched through fog and balsam amid lumber-road ruins.
Admiral Arthur W. Radford told Congress that relying on giant B 36 bombers for a quick victory is a poor bet for national security. He argued strategic bombing alone cannot secure victory, challenging the push for air power as the sole path. The House Armed Services Committee heard his public stance amid intense debate over war strategy.

Activities include riding and lancing by Knights of the South Branch Valley and contests across the city.
In Washington John L. Lewis and leading soft coal operators met conciliation chief Cyrus Ching to urge a settlement as a 19 day strike drags on. Lewis, Kennedy and Owens joined behind closed doors while Ching and aides guided talks that appeared exploratory with no immediate contract agreement.
The attorney general's office says it would be extremely poor policy for a county court to name the county clerk as its agent for feeding prisoners. The opinion notes the clerk cannot legally be designated as the court's agent or receive extra pay. The court may hire an agent to buy food and manage the feeding program, but such action risks questionable legality. The advice came at the request of Tax Commissioner C H Koontz and William French Hun, Morgan town Commissioner of Accounts.
Frank Griffin 27 of Chesapeake is held in Kanawha county jail awaiting a preliminary hearing on murder charges. Clyde Comer 23, also of Chesapeake, died in a local hospital from a bullet wound after an argument with Griffin in a parked car in Chesapeake. State Trooper Sam Whitman provided details.
In September 1948 Charleston reports total unemployment benefits of 1.903 million dollars, a five percent drop from August’s 2.061 million. The September figure, however, is more than five times August’s 346,641, according to Employment Secretary and Director Cabell Davis.
