Hunter Missing In Laurel Mountain Search Near Tunnel Fork

The first group reburial of World War IX heroes is set for Thursday December 1 at 10 am at the state National Cemetery. Local VFW and American Legion posts will assist with the ceremonies and nearby National Guard honor guards may attend. County Game Protector Joseph W. Powell reports thirty two deer killed in Taylor County during the first two days of the season with no accidents. An additional seven kills Sunday bring the opening day total to seven, and five more were recorded yesterday. Hunters largely used stand hunting as driving dwindled. Dr. Virgil Lewis Chambers, 54, a Huntington heart specialist, was found dead beside his car early today. Coroner F X Schuller said he likely suffered a heart attack after leaving a Masonic lodge event. A Raleigh County native, Chambers long resided in Huntington and as a youth was West Virginia’s first Boy Scout to earn a Scout medal for saving a drowning boy in the Guyandotte River.

300 Miners To Draw Jobless Pay Benefits
Welch West Virginia reports that about 300 miners unable to return to work during the strike truce will receive jobless benefits. Manager Oscar A. Duff of the local employment security office said the miners worked in mines that remained closed after the November 9 truce. Duff noted several large area mines stayed shut due to coal industry instability but did not name them. He said the miners have not found work elsewhere, though he expects reemployment if UMW and coal operators reach a new contract.
