West Virginia U Students Protest Death of Gym Plans
Morgantown, May 14. West Virginia University plans a mass meeting to protest the state board of control’s withdrawal of a legislature appropriation for a gymnasium. Harden Hatfield, student body president, said two representatives will go to Charleston to press for the gymnasium appropriation before the joint legislative revenue committee. The 1921 appropriation of 000 for a gymnasium was diverted in 1928 to the chemistry building. a new 20,000 appropriation was voted. The state budget commission later recommended no 300,000 gymnasium funds, and the 200,000 from 1921 would be used for a 695,000 administration building. The university’s need for a gymnasium is emphasized as a long-standing priority, with the gymnasium serving student physical education beyond intercollegiate athletics.
