Archbishop Damaskinos, former regent of Greece, died suddenly in Athens at age 58. He ruled as regent from 1944 to 1946 and had been in poor health for months, suffering heart trouble. After Greece’s liberation, he led the primate church until the monarchy plebiscite restored the king and he relinquished his post.
Secretary of State Acheson set a no compromise stance ahead of the Paris foreign ministers conference. He emphasized protecting Western Europe's economic recovery and political stability with Germany playing a key role. He warned against bargaining hard-won Western gains for illusory promises.
Washington economy advocates push for a 39 percent cut in the Army civil functions bill amid Senate debate. Officials for the Memorial Day weekend boat races at Tygart Lake were announced after a racing committee meeting led by Ira Poe and Charles H. Casner. Pollock notes a postwar shift with about 5,000 procedures performed by him over 30 years, including public figures, while the field expands from secret, hush-hush beginnings to a booming medical specialty.
Huntington plans a major air show and parade honoring West Virginia hero Captain Charles Yeager. Over 36 planes including B-50s, F-84s, F-80s and P-61 Mustangs will fly over a mile-long downtown route. Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier, arrived in Hamlin with a motorcade after a town greeting andaddressed a local high school graduating class.

Four Grafton youths and one Flemington youth were chosen as sponsors for the American Legion Mountaineer Boy's State session at Jackson's Mill the week of June 5 to 11. Names include Benny Poe Richard Falls Charles Jarrett John Lawrence Waters and Sam Isabella. The team is chaired by Taylor County Post 12's Jack R. Nuzum. In other news the Chicago Railroad Fair Train of the Baltimore and Ohio will pass through Grafton May 23 for a brief servicing stop en route to Clarksburg, featuring 22 historic exhibits and locomotives from 1832 to 1835 plus replicas and historic transport gear. The trip traces the B&O's early mainline from Baltimore toward Chicago, marking a milestone in rail history.
Monongalia Countians voted in a county wide special election to decide if to continue an excess school levy. approval would raise about 685000 for construction land purchases and improvements with a salary boost for teachers and a 10 percent raise for non teaching staff. The current three year levy expires June 30.
Yonkers report details a 25 year old who transitioned from female to male after discovering gender options. After high school and a secretary job, she pursued operations with a doctor and two assistants two weeks ago, adopting a boyish appearance and wearing trousers. The transformation is described as a positive change by the patient.

Ford Motor Company declined to open simultaneous contract discussions while CIO UAW negotiations continue a 16 day old strike. UAW demands start of new talks by next month as the Ford contract nears its July 15 expiry. Vice president John S. Bugas reiterated the company’s stance that talks won’t begin before June 1, saying the union aims to mix issues and mislead the process.
Carl Hardy 35 of Radford Virginia died after falling from a scaffold at Bluestone Bridge where three men were working. The scaffold gave way during repairs, Hardy aimed for a rock ledge ten feet away but fell twenty five feet to the ground. His two companions escaped injury as the other side of the scaffold stayed intact.
Princeton area officials say financial aid for municipalities will top the agenda at Charleston Monday for the joint legislative committee on government and finance. Senate President Johnston and House Speaker Flannery co chair the 10 member panel. the meeting aims to decide studies and potential aid policies despite ongoing liquor profits court case.
Charles W. Matthews honored by the Graham Kiwanis club as the nation’s oldest living Kiwanian. The 101 or 102 year old veteran hosted a banquet, presided over a 10-pound cake, sang Dixie, and received greeting cards for fellow Confederate veterans.
The State Department said Washington will not relax aid to non-Communist Greece until Soviet backed Greek guerrilla support ends. It rejected moving the Greek crisis from the United Nations to great power hands and affirmed that talks with the Soviet Union would occur only in proper international forums.
