Governor Marland Tuesday signed into law two bills that exempt public education agencies from the 2 percent state tax on vehicles they purchase such as school buses. The move affects funding for school transportation statewide and signals fiscal policy adjustments for education operations.
Joseph Lee Evans Jr was appointed to fill the remainder of Councilman William Beall’s term after a 10 minute executive session. Beall resigned and was thanked for his service. The Council also approved the fiscal 1955 City Hospital budget of 321520 and discussed a Charles Daken fruit market proposal near St. Mary’s West Main street.
Roy J. Kiger, 50, of 1024 West Main Street, a 32 year Hazel Atlas Glass Factory veteran, announced his candidacy for city council. He aims to apply strong management and open minded problem solving to city finances, streets, and water, to keep young people in Grafton. He cites prior service on the Board of Trade water study and notes his two children and a son in the U.S. Navy.
Philadelphia Republicans repudiated party bosses in a bid to regain control, nominating W. Thasber Longstreth for mayor with opposition to Richardson Dilworth and Clark’s backing. Longstreth, a Princeton athlete, defeated George Williams and James Clothier in a tight three way race.
The Wisconsin Public Service Commission charged that lifting federal regulation on natural gas prices could let millions be exploited by a few monopolistic producers. Charleston reports receipts from the state gross sales tax on businesses dropped 13 percent in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. Washington notes a private dinner between Dag Hammarskjold and John Foster Dulles sparks speculation on freeing jailed American fliers in Red China. Detroit notes Ford executives met with CIO United Auto Workers on the union demand for full pay during layoffs.

Charleston W Va Gov Marland signs the special session measure to raise property assessments toward 50 percent of actual value by 1959-60. Counties must reach 35 percent by 1956-57 and 50 percent by 1959-60 to receive full state school aid. The law also mandates annual property surveys by the tax commissioner and continued use of the 1952 survey.

At 12 45 a m Sheriff Guy Cole led a Taylor County operation with State Police and prosecutors to raid Sam Speno's Owls Club near Fetterman Bridge. The raid aimed to determine beer license status and deter illegal operation, with prosecutors and local authorities pledging to act on complaints.
Toronto magistrate T Elmore sentences Bert Cupples to two months for vagrancy after Cupples throws a frayed telephone book at him. The magistrate stays calm and does not increase the sentence despite the provocation.
May 18 frost brought a mercury low of 29 degrees the coldest in years. Officials worry garden and crop damage if temperatures drop again tonight. Yesterday’s high reached 64 with noon readings at 58 and near 64 to 66 expected later. Clear skies and warmer temperatures are forecast for tomorrow.

She is the first person charged under New Yorks new party line law. In Tokyo four U S Air Force F84 Thunderjets set a record breaking 4800 mile non stop flight to Australia with a spare jet crash landing in Japan.
Grafton High School reports over 800 reservations for the alumni celebration on May 28. Attendees hail from Nevada, Maine, Texas, New Jersey, and more. no tickets at the door for banquet or dance. Ellen Jane Wiseman, general chairman, notes Future Nurses of Grafton High will provide babysitting with reservations by calling the high school.
President Eisenhower defended Health Secretary Oveta Culp Hobby against charges of incompetence while affirming that Salk pulsed vaccine supplies are sufficient to finish first and second graders’ initial inoculations. He noted potential after school inoculation days and praised Hobby’s record and wartime service guiding the Women’s Army Corps.
State Employment Security Department reports a notable drop in unemployment across north central West Virginia including Fairmont Morgantown Clarksburg and Parkersburg this year. Meanwhile thousands of Communist inspired Chinese students staged stay in strikes at three Singapore schools and fears of further riots gripped the city.
