Monaco announces the death of Prince Louis II at age 78 after ill health. He handed duties to his grandson Prince Ranier just last Thursday, ending a long rule that began in 1922 after succeeding Prince Albert I.
Marshal Vassily Sokolovsky charged the United States and Britain with creating artificial tensions and claimed the western powers sabotaged Yalta and Potsdam. He noted no peace treaty with Germany and called for a new type Soviet Army to win a modern war.
Manhattan erupts in rallies and door to door campaigning as Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr seeks the 20th district seat in the May 17 special election. With 25,630 signatures on his petition supporters push for victory though voters may not back him or even vote.
A 52 year old man admitted strangling his bride from the Lonely Hearts Club in Farmington Missouri. Missouri highway patrol said the statement by William C Mahurin was the first break in the death of Mrs Mahurin, a former St Louis woman. Retired A G White noted discrepancies in the oral statement and said Mahurin probably will sign the statement later.
An unidentified man blindfolded with a necktie leapt from a 100 foot cliff on Second Avenue near the Champion Coal company retail yards. He was reported in critical condition at Mercy Hospital.
Bids opened for the Tygart Lake bath house project show Kenhill Construction of Charleston with the low bid of 63. Harmon Brothers of Grafton submitted the second low bid while Shaw Construction of Morgantown placed third. Al Carl Riggs in Washington, DC, is handling purchasing and may delay final award until Thursday. Approximately 54,000 dollars is expected for the bathhouse, a 150 foot long lime stone concrete block structure to serve 800 bathers and be finished within 18 days of contract let.
Washington Democrats in House bar committee are polishing two labor bills. One seeks to repeal Taft Hartley. the other aims for a seven cent minimum wage. Leaders plan floor action this month on minimum wage and a June return on Taft Hartley repeal. Reps Sims and Jacobs work on a new compromise Taft Hartley repeal backed by leadership, following last week’s debate.
Three mountain youths were jailed and charged with beating 69 year old John Caldwell to death to steal 1277 dollars. The victim was well known to the trio, one of whom was his grandson and another his nephew. The youngest, 16 year old Bernie Martin, wielded the murder weapon. Martin’s great uncle was Caldwell, with two others charged with plotting and aiding. Prosecutor J Floyd Harrison quoted Martin about the motive.
The government prepared to present new indictments to the federal grand jury in the William G. Lias income tax case. The grand jury convenes tomorrow as U. S. District Attorney C. Lee Spillers said new presentments would be sought after recent charges against the Wheeling race track owner were dismissed. Also up for consideration are charges connected to the Follawsbee bank robbery by three armed men who fled with more than $5,000.
Four African American men died when their car struck an abutment and plunged into about 15 feet of water at Witcher's creek on U S Route 60 near Charleston. Earlier, Fitch Patrick McMillan age 32, operator of a downtown parking lot, was killed near Rocky Fork road when his car out of control collided with a tree Eleven miles from Charleston.
Acting Detroit Mayor George Edwards appealed to Henry Ford II and Walter Reuther to end a five day strike by 65 000 Ford workers. He proposed three options: direct negotiations, mediation by Detroit's labor management citizens committee, or mediation by Edwards himself. The committee had been formed years ago but rarely used in major strikes.
Grafton Senior High School band returned from Huntington with an excellent audition rating and superior marks in marching and field drills. Solo cornetist Paul Shahan from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra led the performance of Janus Overture. The band’s field drills included a baseball diamond and songs Take Me Out to the Ball Game and Let Me Call You Sweetheart, judged superior by Eugene Weisell of Ohio State University.
VANCOUVER B C AP dispatch says Grant and Sheila, a 30 year old Vancouver pilot and a 28 year old student nurse, were marooned for six days after their Canuck aircraft crashed in a snowstorm atop Mount Hozomeen. They returned home last night, exhausted, sun burned, and grimy after their harrowing ordeal.
The weekly France Dimanche was seized by police over the weekend before street release. The action cited insults to a foreign head of state and included images that allegedly showed Princess Margaret in a seaside scene. One photo resembled a nude figure, with uncertainty about the person.
State Auditor Edgar Sims declines to approve April supplemental pension benefits for 42 West Virginia university staff retirees. The university notes these payments, funded by legislative appropriations, are authorized by the retirement act but are not issued due to Sims refusal.
In Clarksburg Bridgeport highway crash, two sisters died and three others were injured. Victims were Mrs Louis Murphy Gaines 56 and Mrs Daisy Morrison Nixon 53, both of Bridgeport. Earl Nixon 42 husband of one victim critical with a broken neck. Others injured included Mrs Mazie Heater 29 of Sa hem and Lloyd Morison 26 son of Mrs Nixon. Morrison the driver said he believed the steering wheel locked.
Norfolk Virginia reports a simulated 200 marine reservists attack on Stewart Airport in Parkersburg as the first all reserve national defense training operation in the United States. The amphibious task force of 500 navy and marine reserves will attempt to capture Stewart Airport from West Virginia National Guard units. Rear Admiral R O Davis designates the operation Mountaineer and directs plans for the exercise.

Robert Morris was sentenced to 60 days in Taylor County Jail after pleading guilty to two indictments for destruction of property. He admitted destroying $20 worth of Stella Waller dishes and two $20 doors owned by Sam Isabella.
At an organization meeting of the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department C Earl Layman was elected president succeeding Darrey J Eisner. Layman previously served as secretary for about two years. Carl H Stark became vice president Louis W Smith was secretary and Harold A Appel continued as treasurer. A $500 resuscitator, capable of two-person artificial respiration, was purchased and delivered as a first department project and a fundraising drive is underway. The compact unit can be operated by one or two men and will aid emergencies as spring boating and swimming season begins.
Police in Canton arrest Paul Van Bibber 24 of Toledo Ohio and Leo Frank Evans 19 of Canton for questioning in the May 3 armed holdup of four customers at the Loop restaurant in Clarksburg. An 18 year old woman Elma Eakle is being detained for questioning. The bandits fled in a stolen car later abandoned in Morgantown. Bibber and Evans are reported as escapees from Mansfield State Reformatory.
