London issued a firm note to the Soviet government repudiating Russia’s charges that the United States British and French negotiations violate the Potsdam agreement. Britain blamed Russia for the breakdown of four power cooperation in restoring Germany’s economic unity.
President Truman urged the United Nations to convene Arab and Jewish leaders for a truce to halt Palestine bloodshed. Warren Austin will present the plan to the Security Council as the U.S. shifts from partition to a temporary UN trusteeship to keep the peace. He warned that unless action is taken open warfare looms and troop use need not be required.
Dr. B. I. Golden of Elkins ninth district commander of the American Legion outlined steps to curb Communist activity and urged Legion members to guard against infiltration into the ranks during Taylor County Post No. 12 bi monthly meeting at the Legion home.
President Truman said he will take whatever steps are necessary under the law to settle the coal strike. He spoke at a news conference about the fact finding board appointed after mediation failed and said he will act once the board reports, including potential court action to halt the strike. Government plans include coal saving orders and actions to slow utilities to avert shortages.
The Grafton Junior Chamber of Commerce will purchase a street flushing machine to aid in cleaning city streets with an estimated expenditure of $6,000. Funds will be raised for the purchase, a topic at the Jaycees meeting held at the Taylor County Board of Trade offices.
Philippi reports the death of Dr Winfield Schott Smith aged 74, Barbour county’s oldest practicing physician. He served as County Health Officer and practiced in Philippi since 1901, except 1908 to 1919 in Huntington. Surviving relatives include his brother Alpheus Smith of Columbus. Rome announces that Italy is willing to negotiate directly with Yugoslavia on Trieste and the free territory. The talks would follow the spirit of the British French and American note proposing the return of the area to Italy. The spokesman spoke in response to questions about direct negotiations.

The West Virginia State Employment Service and Taylor County Board of Trade conclude a four month labor survey showing 2258 available workers in the Grafton area exact figures: 1225 men and 935 women. A booklet detailing the area’s economy and labor data has been prepared by the Department of Unemployment Compensation research and statistics division for local use. John I. Sutton, March 25. Parking meters that sparked controversy are being removed from the streets. A company official said the meters, in operation on a trial basis, yielded only 1000 dollars in revenue and fines in nine months. Removal has begun after a store owner secured a court order to block meters in front of his business for blocking exit and entrance.
Dr Chaim Weizmann condemned the American decision to abandon partition saying it will raise bloodshed. He urged Jews to back the UN plan and warned Washington's stance appeases Arab aggression during a lull in UN Palestine deliberations over an interim trusteeship. He spoke amid slow discussions and American silence on U N policy.
Congress heatedly examined disclosures that American warplane engines and other materials are being shipped to Russia amid global tension. House Investigating Committee chair Ridley announced a demand for a full Commerce Department breakdown of all U S materials sent to Russia and its allies and ordered an immediate check into reports about boxes and crates.
Four men were killed and thirteen injured when a steel furnace slipped from a blast pipe and poured coke and burning slag at Bethlehem Steel Corp plant last night. Three victims were charred beyond recognition, delaying identification. Augustus Knecht of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, is among the injured. This incident occurred during early evening operations.

Nine prisoners rioted at the Fairmont county jail yesterday causing several hundred dollars in damage. Doors were torn loose toilets and wash basins smashed steel bunks pulled from walls and a drain pipe broken. Officers restored order with police assistance as the prisoners returned to their cells pending the next criminal court term.
The House today approved a one year continuation of rent controls by a vote of 220 to 95 affecting about 13,000,000 dwellings and 50,600,000 people. The measure, forged by a senate house conference committee, gives a federal court final say on rent boosts and avoids full decontrol. Senate action was anticipated to follow, with President Truman expected to receive the bill by nightfall.
West Virginia's share of the nation's 197 billion income last year was 1.93 billion, with about 20 percent requisitioned for federal costs. The State Chamber of Commerce reported that in an average county taxes supporting the county were only two percent of the county's contribution to federal government collections.
Secretary of Defense Forrestal urged Congress to rapidly expand the armed forces and draft men aged 19 to 25. He outlined aims to boost total manpower by 349,500 and secure $3 billion more, plus a universal military training system to yield 850,000 trained annually. President Truman planned a revised defense program with forthcoming cost estimates.
Washington reports Secretary Marshall said the United States will resist further Russian refusals to cooperate in Allied control of Germany. He held a news conference endorsing General Clay and his aim to keep machinery running in Berlin, backing Clay’s resolve to stay in the city.
Washington march 25 reports President Truman will seek defense boosts and trigger vote-switching talk among Democrats who backed the tax cut. Republican leaders say shifts won t be enough to overcome Truman s veto of the 4.8 billion dollar reduction bill as the House completed its first run with a 289 to 67 vote.
