The wage dispute between railroads and 16 non-operating unions ends in a $40 million yearly wage boost. A 40 hour week for one million workers starts Sept 1 with a seven cent rise to last until Dec 1. Yardmasters keep six day weeks with 10 cent raise. Overtime rates set at time and a half.
Mrs Nellie Stubbins Burke widow of Major Charles E Burke died at 11 o'clock last night at her son Billie O Burkes home 22 Garden Village Fairmont she was 69 born October 2 1879 in Grafton daughter of Maurice and Edith Dow ning Stubbins she leaves two sons Charles 8 Burke Berkeley Springs and Billie O Burke Fairmont a brother Claude M Stubbins Martinsburg three grandchildren and several relatives she held many civic posts and an Eastern Star service is planned Bartlett Funeral Home Tuesday at 8 pm with callers after 1 pm the following day
Miss Eleanor Brown Moreland, 71, a pioneer WVU graduate and organizer of its domestic science department, died today. Until retirement two years ago she was assistant dean of women at Marshall College in Huntington. Her death occurred at a sanitarium in Washington, Pennsylvania.
The Hoover Commission proposed a cabinet level Department of Public Welfare and Education and a merged federal medical care agency. It would centralize hospital facilities and reduce duplication, affecting 24 million people served by government medical care. The plan drew mixed support, with criticism from the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars who oppose stripping VA networks.
President Truman, speaking to the United States Conference of Mayors, denounced “trouble makers” who talk of a rift with Congress and said he and Congress are working together for the country. He attacked the real estate lobby as the real enemy of the American home and criticized its opposition to housing and rent control.

State Trooper Paul B. Swiger announced the arrests of Levi Goines John Robinson and Russell Goines in connection with dumping trucks hauling coal from non union mines along a Harrison County highway. Levi and John Goines face charges of feloniously taking temporary control of a truck while Russell Goines was held as a material witness. All posted $1,000 bond.
Miners and operators focus on Washington as John L. Lewis presses a two week old stoppage to memorialize killed and injured miners and protest Dr. James Boyd's U S Bureau of Mines nomination. Senate Interior Committee backs Boyd 10 to 1 while full Senate delays action. Operators fear Lewis may extend or lift the idle period when next scheduled.
In Washington a modified rent control extension races against the March 31 expiry affecting millions of homes. Senator Maybank chairs the banking committee and seeks a 12 to 15 month extension with possible 10 percent rent increases. The bill faces Senate House diffs and major battles over amendments from Cain and Bricker.
A pre-dawn fire at 507 Walnut street caused property damage over $1,000 to Mr. and Mrs. Tra Marquess residence. The blaze from an overheated Warm Morning coal heater damaged the basement, stairway, kitchen, wallpaper, curtains, and furniture. Graf ton Volunteer Fire Department battled the flames, rescuing the family who fled in night clothing. Mrs Marquess awakened by smoke, saying she rose around 4 a.m. to wash, then left the home as the fire intensified. The 1- Chevrolet in the garage was not moved.
The Taylor County Red Cross fund campaign nears its March 31 close with $1,618.93 raised toward a $3,000 goal. Grafton Woman's Club leads house-to-house canvassing, with county, Parkview, and rural captains and workers listed, as weather delays ease. Baltimore and Ohio President Roy B White announced 1948 was the railroad's second safest year with 7.09 injuries per million hours. Ned H Dearborn praised the safety record and urged ongoing injury reduction efforts.
Western powers declare the Russian East mark no longer legal tender in their zones splitting Berlin's economy. Western Berlin uses the West Mark worth about four times the East Mark, with the East Mark still usable for rationed foods this month and for rent and taxes in April.
Glenn Bolyard aged 24 of Morgantown paid a $25 fine and costs after appearing in municipal police court this morning on speeding charges. The 1941 Chrysler he drove jumped the wall and landed in the lawn of Phillip M. Gerkin at 184 Lincoln Street, causing wall damage. Bolyard and passenger F H Jemker, Morgantown residents, escaped injury as the car veered off Lincoln Street during a curve. The incident occurred about 11 pm Saturday night.
President Truman plans a billion dollar military aid program to arm western Europe. He seeks blank check authority from Congress, with first year costs projected above one billion dollars. The plan aligns with the North Atlantic treaty and awaits Senate ratification, supported by a wide bloc of lawmakers.
Washington, Bernard M. Baruch told the United Nations Conference of Mayors that the United States must seek a global peace decision to avert economic collapse from high prices and taxes. He urged a clear stance against panicky measures and backing for a Russia settlement, warning the dangers of pursuing peace in a self-serving image and stressing the need to organize national resolve.
In the Smoky Mountains south of Maryville rescue teams work to reach four Detroit occupants believed to have survived a Friday light plane crash near the Tennessee North Carolina line. Stephen A. Walker 46 reported the others as James Hardy 23 Mr and Mrs Hall and Orville Rich 38. Walker walked 25 miles in 42 hours to reach a phone maintained by Alcoa before transfer to a hospital. Plans for the Taylor County Board of Trade annual dinner meeting unfold tonight at 6 30 at the Hotel Grafton dining room with about 150 members and local civic groups expected. West Virginia Conservation Commission Director Dr C F McClintic will speak on Tygart River State Park development, joined by Rep Jack R Nuzum and other local leaders as toastmaster and brief speakers from business clubs and civic groups.
The City hospital welcomed the birth of a girl to Mr. and Mrs. William White of 109 Beech Street. The infant arrived yesterday at 2:47 p.m., weighing 12 pounds.
