Fire sweeps two miles on hill west of dam
A fire swept over more than two miles of woodland brush and grass on the hill west of Grafton dam opposite Webster. It destroyed a vacant dwelling, a barn and outbuildings, burning the old Jack Raucher homestead. Firefighters fought for over seven hours until rain and efforts brought it under control around 8 p.m. The unoccupied home stored farm tools and was not valued highly. Parkview area safety measures were readied as the blaze neared the Parkview Bay area.

A 17 pound prize ham at the Future Farmers of America show sold for 408 dollars setting a possible state record. The ham bought by James Kay Thomas of Charleston, a gubernatorial candidate, marked high prices for the exhibit. Eggs and bacon also sold, with brown eggs at 20 cents a dozen and white eggs at 7 cents, while bacon brought 2.50 a pound, all bought by Charleston men.

Agriculture funds cut only very slightly by Congress
Washington March 16 The house appropriations committee urged a 4.2 percent cut in the agriculture department budget for the next year while approving 543 421 453 dollars in new cash. It also recommended 65 million for the school lunch program 400 million loan authority for the rural electrification administration and 150 million to pay farmers for soil conservation under AAA this year with 225 million for next year. The panel trimmed production and subsistence loan funds to 60 million from 75 million but fully granted 15 million for tenant farmer loans. The REA loan authority stands at 400 million, 100 million above the president’s request and 175 million more than this year. The bill goes to the house for debate later this week.

One Killed In Forest Fire In Southern W Va

State coal miners almost a hundred percent out today
