Senator Robert A. Taft and Senator Owen Brewster escaped unharmed when their single engine plane crashed on the Kennebec river near Augusta Maine during a campaign swing. Pilot John T. Clark and Taft aide walked through deep snow to the highway before continuing to Bangor. Governor Horace A. Hildreth said the engine quit after takeoff and noted the Dow Field in Bangor was closing to civilian traffic as a potential alternative field. Mrs. Taft was en route to Bangor and joined the delegation in Hildreth's car.

CHICAGO March 15 Two of three major meat packers rejected an arbitration offer on wage disputes with CIO Unite Packinghouse Workers who threaten a nationwide strike at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow. Swift and Company and Cudahy Packing declined the nine cent per hour raise, while Armour & Company did not. The union had sought 29 cents an hour for about 100,000 members and said it would suspend the strike if arbitration is accepted, given the 20 cent gap.

Mother and two sons killed by freight train near Rowlesburg
A Preston County mother Ethel Himerrick age 43 and her eight year old son Charles Edward died when struck by a Baltimore and Ohio freight train as they walked along tracks near the McMillen community two miles east of Rowlesburg. Three year old Walter Lawrence died later at Myers Clinic hospital Philippi from head injuries and a fractured leg. A daughter Helen escaped injury. The family was en route to Rowlesburg to visit relatives and buy groceries. The fatal incident occurred after an eastbound passenger train passed and a westbound freight train, with many cars, was approaching soon after. The body of Edward was recovered from under ice two hours later. Walter was found in a ditch beside the track. The train delay lasted about an hour as investigators worked. See MOTHER, page 2.
