Cloudy and warm with scattered showers and highs in the 80s and around 80 in the mountains. Friday forecasts more humid with possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. 24 hour temperatures ending 5 pm show Wednesday high 87 and low 55, recent readings include 11 am today at 84 and Tygart Dam values of 89/67 yesterday.
Grafton area coal miners in the United Mine Workers of America receive their annual vacation checks with regular pay as mines close for the holiday ending July 8. In West Virginia about 70,090 union members drawing roughly 30 million dollars, with each miner on payroll June 1, 1956 to May 31, 1957 receiving 180 dollars in vacation pay plus about 17 million dollars in vacation pay checks. Skeleton crews stay for maintenance and will receive time off and later vacation pay. Vacation pay rose from 140 to 180 dollars this year.
Former Undersecretary of State Herbert Hoover Jr is recalled to the State Department as a part time consultant on oil and related issues. A wide array of international items follows including indictments in Elizabeth New Jersey and royal activity in London.

Statewide allocations plus teachers' salary increases total 6.19 million for Kanawha County, with Harrison County gaining 1.90 million and Ohio County facing a 104 thousand cut. Distribution begins next month as figures for every county are listed with individual amounts.

In Chicago an 18 year old Joseph Schwartz received a 50 year prison sentence for the bludgeon murder of Alvin Palmer 17. The trial of Schwartz and 11 fellow gang members accused in the hammer slaying began immediately as a crackdown on teenage killers continues. A week earlier juries had sentenced three youths to 99 to 110 years for murdering a motel operator during a holdup spree.
The report notes a waning temperature in New York with a mid day reading around Bryce Canyon Utah at 52 degrees. Weather observations mention a chilly early morning with inconsistent readings across locations.
BLOOMINGDALE OHIO Five coal miners entombed for 14 hours were rescued after a giant auger bore through to a low chamber in a Powhatan Coal Co strip mine near here. The five men Joseph Lupinski Martin Kowalski Henry Horvath and Pred Sable crawled to safety at 10 50 p m EDT. They were unharmed and cheered as rescue workers and families watched.
Adlai Stevenson arrived in Lagos Nigeria on a Wednesday night as part of his tour of Africa. He plans meetings with local leaders and to observe regional developments during the trip.
Huntsville Alabama reports Colonel John C. Nickerson Jr testified that a gross over emphasis on air power exists in the Defense Department and that he released secret missile data to ensure a future for a weapon. Nickerson pleaded guilty to 15 specifications of mishandling secrets. Von Braun, the German rocket pioneer, testified that Nickerson was motivated by national security fears, not negligence.

In Washington the U S Court of Appeals upheld the State Secretary’s right to withhold passports from those who refuse to submit affidavits.
