Cloudy and warmer today with highs 80 to 85 west and 70 east, then partly cloudy and humid tonight across the region. Temperatures show 72 at 7 am and 73 at 11 am today with scattered thunderstorms possible Thursday afternoon.
James Ray Sheets 20, Navy member, received a jail sentence after state troopers clocked him at 75 mph on Route 50 near Ivandale. Justice W. C. Lawson said the rain slick road and warning to slow down justify jail over fines. Sheets pled guilty but chose jail over a fine, license surrender, or plate forfeiture.
Clifton L. Reynolds, manager of the C. and P. Telephone Co., was installed as president of the Grafton Rotary Club at its noon meeting at Four Corners Restaurant. Reynolds succeeds Hamric and will serve a one year term starting July 1. He thanked the retiring president, who received a diamond past president’s pin. The Rev Harry T. Rowe was named the new vice president.
The U S Weather Bureau records show a 36 degree low at Fraser Colorado this morning and a high of 119 degrees at Needles California on Tuesday.
Graf ton water reservoir will be drained and cleaned for the first time since 1949 with chlorine spray. City Manager Harry B. Batson says water pressure will drop citywide while the tank near the hospital is serviced, and residents should store extra water. The Public Health Department urges biennial cleaning of storage tanks to remove sediments.
Temperatures in the Grafton area cooled by steady breezes for a second day as a forecasted high near 85 appears for today. Tygart Dam reported 80 degrees for Tuesday with 62 low, while Blueville data were unavailable. Tonight expected cloudiness with 60 to 65 lows, and Thursday set for partly cloudy, warm, humid conditions with scattered thunderstorms. farmers hope for rain to ease drought.

Five miners are trapped after a rockfall sealed a Betsy Mine passage at Powhatan firm in Cadiz Ohio. Mine rescue crews rushed to the scene while 30 to 35 men worked the shaft. Three miners escaped safely as crews tunneled toward the trapped group identified as Hamilton Supinski Horvath and Fable. The U S Bureau of Mines sent specialists to assist from St Clairsville.
Diana Lynn Carroll, 2, died after running in front of an asphalt truck on W Va 10 near Taplin. The child pulled away from her aunt Wanda Reedy and darted from behind a parked car into the truck’s path. Driver Frank Gaylock Jr. of Logan was not charged.
Three appointments to state boards and commissions were announced by the governor. R. Virgil Rohrbough, state School Superintendent, and Irvin Stewart, West Virginia University president, were named to the Southern Regional Education Board. Rohrbough’s term runs to June 30, 1960, replacing W. W. Trent, while Stewart fills a vacancy ending June 30, 1961.
North Korea's commander Chung Kook Rok denounced the armistice arms freeze as the UN met to address a 100,000 man increase in North Korean forces. Allied Maj. Gen. Homer Litzenberg reported a 700 jet bomber and fighter fleet buildup and bases above the 38th parallel. Chung claimed the policy aims to prepare for an atomic war as the arms race heated at Panmunjom.
The first hurricane of the year, Audrey, is forecast to hit Louisiana Thursday night with 100 mph winds. The U S Weather Bureau warned at 10 am est that gales will lash the coastline tonight. The storm sits in the Bay of Campeche and tides are expected to rise five to eight feet along the coast and the Mississippi Sound by late Thursday.
The Nautilus, the world’s first atomic powered submarine, is on display at the U S Naval Shipyard in San Francisco for four days, drawing crowds as the crew stands by for inspection and public viewing.
Federal Judge Sirica convicted Teamsters Union vice president Frank W. Brewster of contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions before a Senate subcommittee. Brewster faced up to $1000 fine and a year in jail. sentencing was deferred for a presentence report.
United Press reports the Mississippi River and its swollen tributaries rising toward flood stage. At least 105 Minnesota families evacuated as new thunderstorms struck Tuesday night. Heavy rains also hit Iowa with Cedar Rapids and Mason City recording up to half an inch, affecting parts of the North Atlantic Coast region.
The AP reports that a warplane, designated AF7886, reddens as the reddest faced in the U S Air Force today while AF7885 named Columbine III, a plush airliner connected to President Eisenhower, develops electrical trouble at Langley Air Force Base. The President shifts to a slower 65 mph return plan.
President Eisenhower urged restraint on price and wage increases to fight inflation. He said corporate directors should raise prices only when absolutely necessary and labor leaders should limit wage demands to productivity gains, except in cases of serious hardship. He defended the Supreme Court and warned against global war, while noting no immediate force reductions beyond Japan and no change to nuclear policy.
CHICHESTER England June coroner ruled today that the headless, handless body found floating in the harbor is Cmdr Lionel Buster Crabb Britain’s famed frogman who vanished last year during a Soviet cruiser inspection Crabb a 46 year old war hero disappeared during the 1956 state visit when Khrushchev and Nikoal were in Britain authorities said.
