The B and N group buys Maple Avenue real estate as plans for a new independent road move forward. Engineers along the river will restake the road and accelerate work. City progress shows most local work done, with rapid country progress expected once rights of way are secured.
Reports indicate rapid progress of the Buckhannon and Northern railroad project with a west side property buyout wave led by the line as engineers restake the route. Citizens along Maple avenue await further closings as right of way negotiations continue, denying claims the line is a mere coal spur or tied to other networks.
The Washington post office department ordered postmasters and railway clerks to weigh all United States mail in post offices and on railroads. Weighing starts July 1, to be conducted over six months with ten classifications and daily, monthly, and quarterly reports. The goal is to determine mail weight and assess if railroads are overcharging the government under contracts.
In Mayor McClung's court Joseph Bolinger sued Morgan White for abusive language toward him and his family. White claimed Bolinger once seized his beefsteak and wienerwurst during an arrest. White has since faced questions about the meat every time he saw Bolinger. McClung fined White $5 and costs, and he could not pay, sending him to jail briefly. Sunday School Picnic section notes a Presbyterian church group outing to the Park for a day of picnicking with about twenty five pupils.
A National Guard member named Roy Straight was transported home to Fairmont after being treated in Charleston. He is affected by typhoid fever and is reported as being taken from the city where the Guard are currently encamped.
Members of the Ladies Aid Society of St Andrew's M E church will meet Friday at 7 PM at the church to choose a new carpet. By order of the president Mrs F Scroeder. 81 at
Ed Valentine of Cumberland Maryland, linked with Ollie Bartlett, was captured after a county chase. Sheriff Means detained Valentine in Simpson jail and planned transfer to Clarkeburg for safekeeping awaiting trial. The pair allegedly stole a horse belonging to Bartlett's father and fled toward Wadell before being pursued.
Rolena Lilly was bitten by a large Collie as Mrs Van Allen supervised embroidery. The bite left facial injuries though no lasting harm expected. Dog confined and watched for rabies. if risk develops it will be killed. Squire Lilly doubts rabies and cites jealousy as motive.
The Tygart Valley Glass Co will close the plant Saturday the 29th for about two weeks to allow first class repairs. Despite the shutdown, the plant has had a successful year and has orders booked for months ahead. Mayor McClung presided over a morning court with three offenders. Pat Hussion was fined for drinking and resisting, Emory Faxenbaker was jailed for drunkenness and resisting, and Morgan White was fined for plain drunkenness. The Eastern Star Naomi Chapter 12 invites lodges 15 and 75 and their ladies to the public installation of officers, followed by a banquet. Also advertised are iron bed springs and mattresses from Coles.
The Sentinel will publish the first standings Saturday evening for the Jamestown Exposition contest. Votes must reach the Sentinel office by 8:00 Friday night to be counted and included in Saturday's paper. Many have inquired and will enter to compete for the prizes, aiming for a strong early showing.
A D U W Decoration prepares for Memorial Decoration Day at Blaemont cemetery Sunday with members meeting at 1 PM. Vincent's band will lead to the cemetery entrance for services and graves of deceased members will be decorated. Judge J Homer Holt will deliver the principal address with other features and band selections.
The funeral service for George H Shields drew a large turnout of former neighbors and relatives. Short services were held at his son's home near the old West Virginia College before moving to the Baily church near Rotetont for the regular service. Addresses were delivered by Rev. FT Kelley of Flemington and others. Odd Fellows ceremonies accompanied the interment with brethren from Grafton and Flemington. Shields was the father of fourteen, eleven surviving him with his wife.
Friday afternoon through Saturday night a Y M C A benefit will be held at the Amose A Theatre in the Compton building. Proceeds support the Y M C A and the program promises success with film features Society Haunt and A Winter s Sleigh Ride. Mine Addie White of 131 Rosa Street hosted a birthday party Monday evening for two dozen young guests replacing Miss Goldie White with a lively celebration.
A John Knotts farm of 400 acres and a 300 acre William K Hall property near Knottsville sold for about 1400 to C E Conaway and associates. The buyers, linked to a Cleveland capital group, agreed after a long negotiation with owners, boosting local coal land values by 15 to 20 dollars per acre. The action signals further negotiations for additional county properties and planned sales of local coal.
