Merger Hearing Sought To Block Bethlehem Youngstown Merge

Judge David G. Jenkins of the Court of Common Pleas in Youngstown Ohio will hear a case aimed at blocking the Bethlehem steel merger with Youngstown. The action requests a court order to prevent completion of the deal.

Motorcycle Club Accident Injures Two Women

At about 10 40 p m on the Northwestern Turnpike in Evansville a lead motorcycle driven by Kenneth Henderson of the Grafton Motorcycle Club struck two pedestrians, Mrs John Rodeheaver and Miss Ruth Evans, causing serious injuries to Mrs Rodeheaver and shock plus leg bruises to Miss Evans. Both were treated at the scene by Dr J A Kimble and transported to Grafton City Hospital for examination. no charges have been filed against Henderson.

Lords Licensing Power Projects Ready For Formal Acceptance

Charleston June 26. Formal acceptance by West Virginia Power and Transmission Company of order 48 allows restoration of power projects in the Kanawha county circuit court appeal window. Governor Conley and the commission approved the order yesterday. Any aggrieved corporation or party to the record may file an appeal within 60 days.

Institutes Open In Taylor County August 27

Taylor county teachers will assemble in the high school auditorium on August 27 for a three day institute. County Superintendent Lloyd L. Shriver announced schedules from the State Department of Education. Other counties set institute starts in late August and early September with varying lengths and host towns across West Virginia.

Cincinnati June 26 AP The Brotherhood of Railway Clerks National Bank failed to open today. A notice on the door signed by a national bank examiner announced closure. An audit by federal examiner William Taylor preceded recent personnel changes including Michael G Heintz becoming vice president and William L Luebee named assistant cashier. The closing follows a prior nearby bank failure linked to Shafer driven speculation and related financial turmoil.

The Southern Cross led by Squadron Leader Kingsford Smith crossed Halifax on the way to New York as forecasts suggested a landing at Roosevelt Field tonight after a nearly 1,200 mile leg. Lees Settlement Of Phone Fuss Over Bluemont Poles

J W Aylt of Gratton office of C P Telephone Co said noon the pole dispute through Bluemont cemetery would be settled. Cemetery Association protested plans to place three direct route poles through the grounds and urged conduits beside Bluemont street or routes via Blueville Northwestern Turnpike or Lincoln street. The association argues poles will be unsightly and mar beautification efforts around the municipal burying ground.

Mayor King bans shorts on Grafton streets in odd scene

Nine girls from a nearby camp paraded in shorts on Main Street drawing a crowd. Mayor Charles C. King told them to return to camp and wear more clothes, then welcomed their visits but urged modest attire. Patrolman Silmon coordinated the mayor’s talk with the group as reporters gathered.

Thief shoots his way out in Washington murder

Washington Iowa June 26 Sheriff Fred Sweet and Night Marshal Aaron Bailey were shot and killed by an automobile thief after a confrontation in Sweet’s office. The killer fled, stealing another car and driving toward Chicago as officers returned fire.

Hoover veto prompts substitute bill on veterans relief

Washington June 26 AP President Hoover vetoed the world war veterans relief bill and a substitute measure is offered to meet his objections. The house by 227 to 139 sustained the veto and moved to consider a substitute bill as soon as the veto is voted on. The substitute would cost an estimated 50 million for 1931 and would replace disability payments with scaled grants. The Senate's action remains uncertain.

Study of Justice of Peace System In West Va

Charleston June 26 A West Virginia justice of the peace study was directed in a resolution by the Charleston Bar Association. The group urged the constitutional commission or the next legislature to consider changes or abolition of the offices. A second resolution called for a two member bar committee to investigate eleven charges of unethical and illegal practices by justices of the peace and constables.
