Michael Manos Builds an Algerian American Dream Tale
Mike Manos, president of the Manessen Amu, built a theater chain from a seed candy business starting in 1901 in New York. He arrived from Greece with no English, sold flowers on Broadway, then expanded stores in Kittanning Jeannette Washington Greensburg and merged with Indiana County theatres. By 1936 he controlled 21 theatres across Pennsylvania and West Virginia through ambitious growth and hands-on learning. He married Kallopia Askounes in 1910 and the Greensburg home at 204 Walnut Street hosted many family reunions.
