Sheriff Fitzhugh Reynolds said eight prisoners fled from a state prison road camp quarry near Mount Clare after jumping from a truck during arrival for work. Guards reported a shower of bullets and the escape prompted extra patrols by the sheriff and state police.
Welfare ministry reports 137 dead and 1 086 missing amid a furious typhoon that struck southern Japan. Police give 93 dead. damages reach millions. Missing include 131 fishers may have perished aboard the Aboa Maru near Honshu coast. Most missing are in the Bungo Strait fisheries. 2 000 homes destroyed and 4 000 severely damaged. No Americans reportedly injured near Okinawa base.
May give indirect approval to the administration's 1.13 billion dollar program arming Western Europe against communism. The 41st annual conference of state executives may reject a 20 percent cut in federal grants in exchange for the government leaving certain tax fields. Conference ends with a new chairman to succeed Governor William Lane Jr. of Maryland.
A strong heat wave grips the northeast, worsening fire risk in New England, New York, and New Jersey. Temperatures rose to the 90s, with no relief and forecast of soaking rains needed to ease danger and protect crops and pastures. Massachusetts reports about 5 million dollars in crop damage, mainly to hay and vegetables.
On the House floor an 83 year old Rep. Sabath and Rep. Cox clashed over the housing bill. Witness Rep. Walter said Cox slapped Sabath, knocking off his glasses, who countered with a quick two punch response before aides separated them. The incident occurred during a quorum call amid earlier bitter tensions.
The Grafton City Council will not raise funds via special taxes for the coming fiscal year and will rely on existing revenue sources. They plan only essential projects, tighten city finances, and oppose gross sales taxes, sewage charges, and a special fire protection levy. Taylor County Board of Trade advocated against the sales tax, warning of burden on a few and possible industrial curtailment. In Washington Judith Coplon faced further cross examination in her espionage trial after testifying she spent two nights in hotel rooms with a man she believed she loved. Prosecutor Kelley pressed details of her relationship with Valentine A. Gubin chet.
Conservation workers moved in with nets and tubs to rescue fish stranded by weekend floods within a 20 mile area around Petersburg Moorefield and Romney. Chief A Seaman said many fish remained in temporary lakes and ponds as the river fell and must be returned to streams to prevent die off. Flood damage to the trout hatchery totaled about 16500 with roughly 85000 trout washed away and property losses around 15000.
Harry Bolyard aged 66 of Scotch Hill two miles from Newburg died at Grafton City Hospital after a runaway horse dragged him 300 to 400 yards while plowing. He was born February 2, 1883 in Fellowsville, survived by a brother Nelson Bolyard and three sisters. Obituary to appear on page four.
Taylor county voters and officials approve funding and housing for a county health unit set to begin before school opens this fall. The Taylor County Board of Education allocates 2070 for operating expenses and 600 to 1000 for housing quarters at West Grafton. City council covers 1610, county court approves 2010, total unit budget 11627 annually, state covers remaining furnishings and support. The unit will operate with Preston county, sharing a health physician while providing its own sanitarian nurse and part-time clerk.
Beckley, Raleigh County Court to raise funds by higher assessments if levy fails. Unofficial returns from 95 of 108 precincts show 4,308 for levy and 2,868 against, with 13 rural precincts yet to report. Levy aimed to raise 486000 for three years for airport work and recreation areas, but was forecast to lose by about 100 votes.
Eight firemen were injured or overcome by smoke as a pre dawn blaze swept roof sections of municipal fish wharves along the Potomac River. Fire Marshal Roy Warfield estimated damage at 25 000 to 50 000, largely from water used to douse waterfront restaurants. The fire, possibly caused by spontaneous ignition, was fought by a fire boat 20 engine companies and six truck companies with two rescue squads and ambulances responding.
Neil Austin of Grafton has been named a member of The American Jersey Cattle Club a local Jersey cattle breeder. The Club Board approved his membership at its Annual Meeting with endorsements from at least five members. Membership grants voting rights and recognizes him as a Jersey cattle owner and breeder.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation declared the Moodstricken Shenandoah and Potomac River Valleys in Virginia and West Virginia disaster areas. It notified Senator Robertson that its Richmond loan office will accept disaster loan applications for property rehabilitation.
Government witness James Price testified in William G. Lias tax evasion trial that he found no evidence Lias had cash at the start of 1942. Price said he sought information on Lias holdings then but was unsuccessful. The defense argues Lias was already wealthy and has spent sums accumulated earlier.
Charleston P A witness testified that Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co saw revenues rise from 6.35 million in 1937 to 1.54 million in 1948 while operating expenses jumped from 4.47 million to 15.98 million in the same period. Net operating expenses edged down slightly from 1.11 million to 1.07 million as profits dipped despite higher revenues.
Secretary of State Acheson travels to the Senate to report on the foreign ministers meeting and push for quicker action on the Atlantic pact and an arms program. President Truman urged no slackening in vital foreign policy areas after Paris. Acheson to brief Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs committees tomorrow with a public statement planned.
John L. Lewis leads negotiations with northern western soft coal operators in White Sulphur Springs to shape a possible national mine strike outcome. UMW talks with captive and southern groups proceed, with Philadelphia and Bluefield meetings. Lewis aims to pit groups against one another for the best industry wide contract.
Worried families are relieved as Clyde Hardman 66 a retired engineer of Blueville and Stafford Sturm 52 a railroad worker of Warder Avenue are confirmed safe. They had been missing since last Friday in the Petersburg flood area. Dr. T W Heironimus Jr brought news after spotting them fishing on river banks. They moved tents thrice to higher ground and kept fishing unaware of the flood. State Police at Franklin confirmed the reports about 7 p m last night and Hardman phoned home this morning to ease fears.
Grafton City Council formally accepted a donated street flusher from the Grafton Junior Chamber of Commerce. The council praised the Jaycees for civic effort and outlined recommendations for nightly flushing of Main Street and nearby streets, proper operation, maintenance, and keeping water for fire use.
Samuel H. Haymond of Gassaway retires after 49 years with B and O and other lines. His final run is at 6 10 p m from Gassaway to Grafton, with friends at the station and a celebration of a long railroad career begun in 1898. He started as a bridge carpenter, later brakeman conductor and fireman before the B and O era, living in Gassaway where he plans to stay and garden.

Tech. Sgt. and Mrs. C W Barking announce the birth of a son in Tokyo Japan on June 21 weighing eight pounds seven ounces. The baby is the couple’s second child and follows a first name similar to William Randall. Mrs Barking is formerly Lorine Phillips of the Country Club road. Dorsey Bolyard of Loveland addition and his wife announce a daughter born at City Hospital on June 18 weighing eight pounds yet ounces. Named Cynthia Sue, the infant is the Bolyards’ third child and second daughter. Mrs Bolyard is Alice Phillips, daughter of Mr and Mrs H N Phillips, with paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Shade Bolyard of Ona street.
