Community of Interest in Soft Coal Power
An editorial notes that a railroad-backed coalition controls soft coal supply and freight rates across key lines from New York Central to Virginia, involving Pennsylvania, Chesapeake and Ohio, Norfolk and Western, and Baltimore and Ohio. It argues this “community of interest” inflates coal values and delays price reductions, urging public policy to curb price manipulation and let supply and competition set levels.
