Insurance showdown over fire loss settlements in California
In San Francisco on June 16, eighty two insurance companies debated settling San Francisco fire losses on a dollar for dollar basis versus a 75 percent settlement. A proposed compromise would set a flat payout on non earthquake damage while allowing discretion on earthquake affected properties. State officials warn that paying only 75 percent could revoke licenses and ruin companies, a stance backed by Insurance Commissioner Marion Wolt and Attorney General Webb.
