Mostly sunny and humid in a high 75 to 84 range with a clear night and low around 50 to 60. Friday to bring warmer conditions. temperatures show 24 hours ending 5 p.m. Wednesday with a high 82 and low 65, plus early morning figures near 70.
The Grafton area enjoyed a spell of cooler weather Wednesday after a week of intense heat. Blueville recorded 82 and 86 at Tygart Dam with 65 low and 52 last night. Forecasters warn the warmup returns Friday. residents lament ongoing drought and need for steady rain to save crops and lawns.
A thief broke into a Honolulu restaurant at night and stole 15 pounds of beef and other items including hats and stew. The raid disrupted the eatery as police investigated the audacious daytime theft.
Washington government asks Supreme Court to reverse a Federal Judge’s ruling blocking the surrender of GI William Girard to Japan for a murder trial. Atty. Gen. Herbert Brownell Jr. urged early disposition and asked for oral argument, with Girard's lawyers to reply within two days.
Former Taylor County Sheriff Guy W. Cole Sr now a field deputy for the state tax commissioner will visit Grafton June 26 to 29 at the Jeporthouse to aid business owners in filing store and general license applications. Licenses are now managed from Charleston on a fiscal year basis beginning July 1, and county clerks no longer issue state licenses. Store owners may mail licenses for 1957 and receive credit toward new ones. Numerous businesses require general licenses such as vending devices, circuses, public shows, peddlers, pawn brokers, and other listed activities.
John I. Booth of the Gratton office of West Virginia Employment Security reports May 1957 data versus April 1957 and May 1956. New work applications totaled 54 in May, with 221 active files including 190 men, 31 women, and 72 veterans. Placements were 30 in May, with 16 men, 14 women, and six veterans. Aptitude tests numbered 14, split into 10 general and four specific.

The girl is daughter of a Swedish attache family, and the boy is a Senate page.
Beginning tomorrow Friday June 21 most Grafton merchants will stay open Fridays until 9 PM and close Saturdays at 6 PM. Nathan Coulson announced the citywide change after surveying merchants who prefer Friday hours to keep Saturday nights free for clerks and workers. The Dade County Health Department reports that Lena Blanche Hyd, a prominent Miami gardener and club figure, died four days after an insect sting to her right foot. Officials say the insect likely carried tetanus, which led to her death.

Elkins West Virginia man John E. Moore about 40, a gift shop owner, was killed in a gun duel with State Police Trooper William A. Steffick on U S Route 33. Moore and his companion Macel Dennison were pursued after suspected thefts and a roadblock was set up by Cpl Evan Moody. The incident followed Moore driving toward Steffick’s patrol car and Moore being shot while climbing into the driver’s seat. Dennison was unharmed aside from a car crash impact. Authorities noted Moore and Dennison were wanted on suspicion of breaking and entering and forgery in Braxton County.
Huntington officials report a former DPA client repaid 2650 from a 25000 estate left by her husband after the estate was settled. It was the largest repayment of its kind in the office history and the department released the lien on her property. In Steubenville Gov ONeill urged industry to place more plants in the Ohio River Valley, calling it a good business location.
Philadelphia story of Aaron Turner a 36 year old Black man who faced four electric chair trials and a life sentence from 1945 to 1957. After a long appeals path including a US Supreme Court filing Turner was freed when the state Supreme Court ordered a new trial or declined to press charges.
