The Santa Fe Railroad streamliner split when the last four cars uncoupled near Capitan New Mexico Tuesday night. Four masked robbers forced their way into Lauritz Melchior and his wife Maria’s Hollywood home on Mulholland Drive late Tuesday night. They tied the couple and the maid, emptied a safe of jewels, cash, and a fur coat, and fled without injuring the 67-year-old opera star or his household. Police described the loot as cash, jewels, and fur, with $300 found in the safe. Authorities noted the bandits acted calmly and escorted all present into the living room before escaping. Melchior, who came to Hollywood in 1944 after a long Metropolitan Opera career, remained unharmed.
