The Senate today began consideration of a bill repealing the federal tax on oleomargarine. The motion to take up the measure passed 57 to 26, but no final action was expected. Senator Fulbright urged attaching the oleo bill to broader farm legislation, while leaders aimed to advance a farm bill first.

Buford Mayle aged 18 and Ephraim Mayle aged 21 of Philippi Barbour County are jailed on rape charges involving an elderly woman identified as Mrs Olly Mayle Johnssn, with preliminary hearing held before Judge Show amid a large crowd. Both suspects are held without bond for grand jury consideration at the September term. The case stems from the assault on a mother Dom John's daughter in Philippi and was reported on page 4.
Gov. J. Strom Thurmond announced a southern caucus opposed to President Truman will be held in Philadelphia just before the Democratic National Convention. Seven southern governors agreed at a private session to invite some western delegations, aiming to block Truman’s renomination and arguing he cannot be elected if nominated.
Rhoda Evelyn Austin aged 15 from Grafton had been missing since May 28 and was found safe in Parkersburg. State Police arrested Lucky Walker and Ollie Lewis on charges of contributing to juvenile delinquency after she telephoned her mother from a Parkersburg address. The girl was returned home by her mother. Trooper H Parks left for Parkersburg to pursue further questioning and possible charges.
Three railroad union heads testified before Congress that President Truman bore responsibility for the failure to settle the railway labor dispute. They charged he pressured settlements to align with an emergency board's recommendations, hamstringing unions and railroads alike.
Oral Jones resigns as deputy finance officer and city clerk for Grafton effective 5 p.m. today after long service. Dorathy Beavers newly hired bookkeeper will assume much of his workload while Jones plans a vacation before seeking new employment. he previously served as temporary city manager under the prior administration.
At noon today bids were due for the new universal garbage collection and disposal service after a city council ordinance. Three persons, L. P. Morgan, Fred Williams, and Charles O'Connor, submitted bids by 11 a.m. One more applicant requested papers but had not returned by the deadline. Curtis D. Decker, city manager, said openings would occur this afternoon and be presented to the council for action tonight.
Cairo dispatch reports Arab delegates and army chiefs met for exploratory talks on the Palestine problem as UN mediator Bernadotte flew from Rhodes to Cairo. He plans discussions with Arab leaders, then a Thursday meeting with Jewish authorities in Tel Aviv before returning to Rhodes. The Holy Land stayed largely quiet on day five of the truce aimed at paving the way for negotiations toward lasting peace.
Common Pleas Judge Clayworth schedules trial for July on murder charges against Dr. William E. Jewls and office assistant Julia Darling. Indictments stem from the death of a Narrows, Virginia girl after an abortion operation.
Walter Hallanan national committee man from West Virginia and president of Plymouth Oil Co. will open the Republican convention in Philadelphia. He will wield the gavel for most of the first day and introduce Mayor Bernard Samuel and Governor Edward Duff. Hallanan is present chairman of the arrangements committee for two prior conventions.
Washington June 15 The House appropriations committee recommended a 438 065 51 appropriation bill cutting Truman requests. It approved 300 000 000 cash and 300 000 000 contract authority for stockpiling strategic materials and 32 700 000 for Alaska army construction. Navy public works get 47 983 200 cash and 50 000 090 contract authority. Commercial airport at Fairbanks funded 3 000 000 cash and 5 000 000 contract authority.
A 20 year old Grafton youth threatened to end his life at the dam last night. His father intervened at the foot of the dam and rescued him a few yards from the water. Frenzy swept the town as friends, police, and local officials were alerted to halt the self harm attempt.
Congress passes a Republican sponsored tariff bill to extend the reciproc al trade agreements act for one year with changes. The House approved by voice vote after Senate amendments, overriding President Truman’s recommendations and prompting renewal debates. The bill awaits veto or enactment to resume trade measures.
Chicago dispatch reports guards watched Roy Adams a 14 year old confessed slayer after he attempted to hang himself in Cook County jail. Warden Frank Sain said he calmed down after tantrums following the failure and threw food at an officer before. A continuation notes a Grafton City Council meeting scheduled for tonight at 8 at City Hall.

Two of the six victims from the pre dawn wreck on State Route 119 near the Blueville intersection remain hospitalized while the other four have improved. Driver Lawrence Miller 20 was discharged yesterday from City Hospital with a cracked rib. Eloise Gillispie 17 and Betty Craft 18 are reported improving after serious injuries including throat wound and scalp laceration.
Officials of United Building Supply propose a 140 story skyscraper 1,366 feet high in Houston. It would surpass Moscow’s Palace of the Soviets and New York’s Empire State Building, housing the world’s largest department store theater and hotel with about 1,500,000 square feet of floor space at an estimated cost of 25 million dollars.
Two central West Virginia men died when a two-seater cub training plane struck high tension lines near the farm of J. D. Cooper five miles from Ravenswood yesterday evening. Wendell N. Jarrett 25 of At Ocean Point in Doddridge County and Keith Ford of Folsom Wetzel County were killed in the blaze after the gasoline tank exploded. Jarrett, a former Ravenswood resident and World War II naval aviator, died in a Ravenswood hospital. Ford died about midnight. Neighbors helped pull the badly burned men from the wreckage after recognizing the nephew of Jess Jarrett, who along with his wife aided rescuers.
Washington, Nov. house leaders move to meet early tomorrow and dispose of a controversial bill sending it to a senate house conference. Debate opens with pleas for defeat as Rep Allen argues the bill is unnecessary and dangerous, amid claims of national security and voluntary enlistments.
Philadelphia June 15 Dr CariBus Pras qure head of West Virginia University political department opened a Flag Day program praising democracy and condemning communism. Carroll Reece accused President Truman of a Stalin quote misstep aimed at courting Communist votes in Europe. Elks and Grafton Lodge No 508 organized exercises and a prayer followed the ceremony.
MOUNDSVILLE June 15 officials of the Moundsville Junior Chamber predict the 1948 West Virginia Beauty Pageant will draw an outstanding group of contestants. Franchises for six local contests are granted and negotiations under way for more across the state. The Pepsi-Cola Scholarship offers $2,000 as a prize for the winner to represent the state in the Miss America Pageant. Pageant officials expect a strong field and look to expand statewide participation.
