Two men forced manager T. Smith at gunpoint to open a safe in a downtown Huntington Woolworth store and fled in a rear alley auto with about 1000 dollars. Police Lt. Swann said the incident followed a prior theft at the same store within two weeks and a sky light entry.

City and state police sought an unmasked robber who held up and robbed two filling stations in Elkins Sunday night. The two hold ups occurred within 15 minutes, yielding about 85 dollars. Attendants described the robber, suggesting the same person may be responsible for both crimes.

Prague June 2 German officials charged nurse Anna Kopecka with misleading authorities after she surrendered and claimed responsibility for a German sergeant Wilhelm Kriest’s death in Kladno. Officials call her an imposter acting on patriotic impulses. The protectorate government warned of severe measures if the slaver not delivered, then reconsidered. Reports said a Bohemia Moravia protectorate reorganization might follow the slaying and the Czech policeman Johann Mueller’s death at Nachod.
In Danzig on June 12 the government charged Polish customs inspector Jan Henryk Lipinski with attempted kidnapping and espionage. Lipinski was seized after posing as a former German army officer to obtain military information during storm troop sports events with 6,000 brownshirts from East Prussia. He fled when police were alerted and was later found in nearby woods. A public trial was promised.
Bloodhounds hunt six state reformatory inmates who seized the warden Walter Johnson and three visitors during a stockade softball game near Buena Vista Colorado. They stole Guard Archer rifle and keys under threat of knifing. A hostage escape followed until a car blocked their path.
Welch held a 37 year old charcoal miner Ed Proffitt shot by his wife Mrs. Ed Proffitt in a family quarry. Trooper C E Dye said she admitted seriously wounding him with a shotgun and was released on $1000 bond pending his injuries. Proffitt received hospital treatment for wounds to the head arm and shoulder.
Rotary International executives opened a four day assembly in White Sulphur Springs with delegates from more than twenty nations. Special trains brought in hundreds of club representatives, registration expected around 500 from 45 states and 37 nations. Incoming officers and district governors-elect will draft a report for the Cleveland convention.
Grafton High School’s band led by John T. Evans captured first prize in the Strawbery Festival parade at Buckhannon on Saturday. West Union finished second and Parsons’ band took third. Also, the cadet corps of 265 boys from the West Virginia Industrial School at Pruntytown, directed by William Jaco, earned a first place.
In mid June, General Motors plants in Flint and nearby Saginaw operated despite a week old UAW AFL strike. Police clashed with pickets in Saginaw injuring a dozen. Flint reported no violence. A 60 policeman detail guarded Saginaw Grey Iron plant. Chevrolet No.5 in Flint ran with reduced crews possibly to halt later.
Charles W Shinnamon, a Bituminous Coal commission official, faces a Hampshire county grand jury in July after the April 24 collision near Romney killed Mrs. Harold Schuck of Harrisonburg Virginia. Shinnamon waived preliminary hearing and is held under a $1 000 bond.
Grafton has been chosen as the next meeting place of the state Sons of the American Legion. The group organized at its first convention held last week at Jackson's Mill. Squadron No. 12, sponsored by the Taylor county post, will host the gathering with Legionnaires assisting.
London dispatch notes Britons pleased with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth after four days of study on their U S reception. Some discontent at rowdy cheers and crude remarks about the queen. heavy security impressed the correspondent.

Williamson June 12 Veterans of the United States last 19th century war joined with the men who served across the seas in 17 in a parade climaxing the 16th annual state encampment of the Veterans of the Spanish War. The encampment was called to order by Charles A. Boyles of Piedmont state commander Williamson officials extended welcome. Organization business was secondary as veterans gathered in groups to discuss the Maine San Juan Hill and Santiago.
Indianapolis reports a weekend wind and rainstorm that killed six people in Indiana Ohio and Wisconsin and caused extensive property damage. About fifty rescued from stormy Lake Erie waters as the storm0 swept through Indiana Illinois Ohio Michigan Wisconsin and Kentucky with unroofed houses and disrupted utilities. Jacksonville Illinois alone tallies about $100 000 in damage.
Byron Nelson defeated Cratg Wood 70 to 73 in a second 18 hole playoff at Philadelphia Country Club to claim the 43rd national open golf title. Wood faltered early but rallied. Nelson led by as many as four via a 4 under par 33 at the turn and finished with a birdie on the 18th. Denny Shute was eliminated in yesterday’s playoff. Nelson and Wood had tied after 72 holes with 284.
Private Wayne Thomas, 23, of Swanton Ohio, stationed at the Army Medical Field Service school in Carlisle, was killed in a head on motorcycle collision in Penbrook. Comrade Private Stanley A. Bartages, 22, Morgantown West Virginia, riding behind him, was seriously injured. Thomas served in the signal corps detachment of the First Medical regiment and was a graduate of the Army Signal school at Fort Monmouth New Jersey on his first enlistment.
The Order of AHEPA in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania opened its annual convention Sunday with a park outing at Oglebay attended by about 1000 delegates. U S Senator Rush D Holt of Weston and Representative A C Schiffler will speak at a banquet tonight. Officers will be named Tuesday.
The House appropriations committee urged adding 292 million dollars to next year’s war department bill to buy 2,290 new regular army planes, 177 National Guard planes, expansion of the Panama Canal garrison, and educational orders for war materiel. Major General Henry H. Arnold testified the expansion would give adequate aerial defense despite German planes. The plan also seeks 251,445,547 for planes and facilities, 27,000,000 for Panama and 14,250,000 for educational orders, with 1,007 planes needed immediately.
During a ball game at Knottsville yesterday afternoon, 23 year old Charles Sandsbury, an employee of Taylor County Hard, was severely injured. He remained between life and death at Grafton City hospital after an emergency operation that removed his spleen and revealed a torn kidney and damaged liver. Doctors D C Peck and H L Noble described his condition as grave but hopeful for recovery, with the patient from the Hial Sandsbury family of Fetterman district.
