A plane crash at 11:37 p.m. EDT killed at least three people and ignited six homes, destroying five. One victim is believed to be a woman, another a day laborer, and the third the first. Investigation details and affected neighborhoods are pending.
Gov Averell Harriman of New York formally declares as an active candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. The bulletin also notes a Senate action on a 871 886 000 public works funds bill and reports on events from Madrid Moscow and Washington including fuel talks and tax policy calls.
The annual food handlers school will be held at Grafton Junior High on June 11 and 12 with three sessions of about ninety minutes each to fit all staff schedules. James King, Taylor County Sanitarian, notes state health rules require all food handlers to obtain a yearly permit, with attendance at one conference plus initial blood test and chest X ray. Mrs. Leona Musgrove’s eight room two story home at 127 West Boyd Street suffered heavy damage to three rooms in a last night blaze. Fire Chief John Proctor said damage estimates would come later and that the rest of the house sustained smoke damage after a neighbor reported smoke around 8 15 p.m. Musgrove was away at the time of the fire.
Buckhannon WV. The West Virginia Conference of Methodist Churches met for reminiscence and dedication ahead of adjournment Sunday. A Friday business session approved a 697000 budget for education extension hospitals and homes with 238000 for World service 188000 for benevelents 119000 for administration and serial purposes and 152500 for building for Christ. Contributions included 32000 to West Virginia Wesleyan College 40009 to Clarksburg Hospital 25000 to Methodist Student Movement and other activities.
Mohawk Power Corp announced plans to rebuild Niagara Falls facilities after a rock slide near American Falls damaged the Schoellkopf plant. Administrative VP Charles Wick put estimated damage at 100 million dollars and said new units would be placed depending on repairs to the remaining one third of the station.
In New Castle Indiana a Chicago Corner Christian Church minister received a letter with a $6 donation from a citizen in poor health. The money is said to be for an unseen churchgoer whose lap robe vanished from a buggy during services about 50 years ago.
The Republican Party released a certified roster listing 60 members of the State Executive Committee elected in the May primary, with Kanawha County still uncertified. The full committee will organize next Saturday. The document names members by district including Wheeling, Moundsville, Parkersburg, Welch, Beckley, Bluefield, and Clarksburg, with various county representatives across the state.
The 32nd annual state Health Conference concluded in Charleston with Oliver Matthews, Preston County Health Department sanitation engineer, installed as the new president. Other officers named include Dr. Bruce H. Pollock Huntington as first vice president Mrs. Oleta M. Biffle Logan as second vice president and Mrs. Katherine L. Brown Charleston as treasurer.
Steam engines to be retained on the B and O Monongah complex as 99 diesel electric units ordered by Mig BRO are aimed at easing schedule delivery and retiring steam on the Cumberland to New Castle main line. Steam locos to remain in Monongah division service and in reserve. diesel electrics to replace steam in Pittsburgh area and Rough Schenles Park corridor.
Charles L. Wilson of Second Street Weston aged 38 died when his 1956 car left the road near the Harrison Taylor county line early this morning. He was alone in the vehicle and his body was taken to Bartlett Funeral Home then to a Weston funeral home. No details available.
In Callerton England miners visit the National Coal Board to install bathrooms at homes to spare families from cold bath nights. Teenage daughters object to miners watching television while girls bathe in front of the fire. Leslie Howe, secretary of the Miner Lodge, says bath nights push families outdoors for otherwise routine routines.
President Eisenhower, stricken with a non malignant intestinal obstruction, underwent a two hour operation at Walter Reed Army Hospital. A four man team performed an entero enterostomy to bypass the blockage. Surgeons reported the heart action normal and the overall condition very satisfactory. Mrs. Eisenhower and Maj. John Eisenhower remained at the hospital through the night. Hagerty provided morning bulletins.
In Charleston the Republican national committee men meet to re elect Walter Hallanan as national committeeman for the 16 delegates. Hallanan is said to hold support of about 10 delegates, likely ensuring his reelection and a successor for Frances Stubblefield as national committeewoman. The meeting aims to fill both posts and set dates for upcoming executive committee actions.
Millard Richards, 46, remained in serious condition after his 15-year-old son was held in connection with injuries sustained when struck with a baseball bat. Richards alleged his son threw stones and swung the bat. the youth said he deflected the bat, striking his father.
The newly elected state Democratic executive committee met in Charleston for organizational purposes. The event highlighted progress by gubernatorial nominee Robert F. Mollohan of Fairmont in unifying the party. Mollohan indicated plans to confer with state Senate President Ralph J. Bean, a conservative leader, who was due to arrive that afternoon.
