Senate approves milikin vandenberg trade act revision

The Senate Finance Committee voted 8 to 5 to extend the foreign trade agreements act one year with a milder revision than the House. A Millikin Vandenberg compromise requires the president to notify Congress within 30 days of ignoring tariff commission recommendations. Prisoners shot by guards during escape attempt

William Chittum a 17 year old former inmate at the West Virginia Industrial School for Boys is one of three youths wounded during an escape attempt at the Rosedale prison camp in Gilmer county. Oliver Burnwell and Frederick Gatewood also sustained injuries. Gatewood, from Raleigh county, was treated for chest and knee wounds and was unconscious for a time. Chittum, from Taylor county, had a hip wound and had been sentenced for grand larceny to 1 to 10 years at the Moundsville penitentiary.

House Committee Would Cut AEC And Veterans Administration

The House appropriations panel proposed cash cuts of about nine percent for the Atomic Energy Commission and seven percent for the Veterans Administration in a $5.79 billion budget to fund six agencies for the new fiscal year. Austin Girl 16 Still Missing From Home

Rhoda Evelyn Austin, 15, daughter of W. C. and Hazel Austin of 515 Walnut street Grafton, has been missing ten days. Police in two states seek a man known as Lucky Walker and a woman identified as Mrs Ollie Lewis as suspects in her disappearance after they were seen in a car near her home before noon May 28. Her parents fear for her safety as she may be with the pair and say she attended Grafton Junior High earlier that day.

Americans to send 21 officers as truce observers to Palestine

Washington announces that twenty one American military officers will depart immediately to serve as truce observers in Palestine, with seven navy officers flying today and seven army and seven air force officers drawn from the European theater. Five Injured In Freak Pennsy Rail Accident

Five passengers in a Pennsylvania railroad sleeping car were injured in a freak crash at Union Station when two cars uncoupled and hit the engine of the Spirit of St. Louis. Seventeen travelers were trapped inside the Pullman as firemen police and railroad workers freed them. two serious injuries reported. Charles W. Five Win Pilot Licenses In University's Program

Morgantown June 8 Five West Virginia University students earned private pilot licenses after completing on air and ground courses. Howard Fowley and Billie Rousseau of Morgantown Donald H Roby of Peterstown Grover Holt Jr of Sharples Logan county and Thomas Booth of Stone Ky qualified. The university began flight activities before the war and has operated without a mishap.

Edwards Kames Alleged Attackers In Fairmont Incident

Lyle R Edwards, wounded in a Saturday melee in Fairmont, named Clarence L Hall and Von B Tucker as his alleged attackers. Hall, 55, noted Fairmont businessman and State Literary veteran, and Tucker, 38, Monongahela Power right of way agent, were bound over to the grand jury on $500 personal recognizance each. Edwards, son of Mire, sustained a slash to the hip and a stab wound in the abdomen. Hillcrest Country Club Explodes in Fire Disaster

A blast at Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles caused the clubhouse roof to blow off and a fire to gut the building. The incident left multiple people injured and hospitalised, including staff seated in the dining area and the men’s grill. Fire response was intensive but costs were estimated at about $178,000.
