A stone throwing mob targeted Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in Bombay with police saying they thwarted the assassination attempt. The chaotic public gathering drew heavy security and widespread concern across the city.
An old fashioned dress parade and beard contest will start at 6 o'clock in front of the B and O Station, proceed to Grafton High School stadium for the pageant, with prizes for women and beard winners. Fireworks follow, then a Round and Square dance at the Moose Home with CAP Orchestra.
The Internal Revenue Service reports cigaret sales nearly back to normal after a three year hump while cigar and pipe use decline and snuff holds. Americans spent about $6 million daily on tax stamps with cigarets making 96 percent of 1.5 billion in tobacco tax receipts.
In Nicosia Cyprus Greek Cypriots killed two people Sunday night and today despite a major government crackdown on the EOKA movement. One victim was a security forces member shot near Famagusta as authorities announced weekend raids that netted 17 EOKA members including two leaders and uncovered large ammunition dumps food stores and secret leadership documents.
A stolen railroad engine with nine freight cars ran through Detroit city streets Sunday as railroad patrolmen and police pursued in vain. The thieves recovered the engine at the original yard and fled, leaving officers empty handed. Officials say the theft was near flawless through several switch systems and included moving cars with precision.
Rain and cold did not dampen a large Saturday afternoon turnout for Grafton’s Centennial Feature Parade. Floats, old and new fire equipment, bands and royalty drew crowds despite cancellations due to weather. awards honored Bridgeport and New Martinsville for equipment, Carmichael and Weston for units, with judges from Mor town Clarksburg and Famont.
Inclement weather forced the Centennial religious service from Grafton High School Stadium to the school auditorium where about 600 worshippers attended. Dr. Ross Culpepper, district superintendent of the Methodist Church in Charleston, spoke on God Has the Answer. A youth song service opened the hour led by Kenneth Godwin, with ministers Oren Reneau Ernest Robertson Charles Huffman C V Tate and Capt. Gilbert Watson taking part.
The West Virginia Osteopathic Society approved a resolution to seek legislative help to end discrimination against its members on West Virginia hospital staffs. Osteopaths are not currently recognized in state hospitals.
The Majestic, a famed showboat, begins its annual summer voyage along the Monongahela and Ohio rivers with performances in Hiram, Ohio and Point Pleasant, W.Va. The troupe presents plays such as Lust Lucre and Liquor and The Drunkard, along with seven acts of vaudeville. Rev. Harry T. SOUTH CHARLESTON the West Virginia Military District headquarters announced today that 231 West Virginia high school seniors will enter the Army this month for a six month tour of active duty. Enlisting under the new Reserve Forces Act they will serve six months on active duty and the remainder of an eight year obligation with their home town reserve unit. Col. Robert E. Wallace said the first June contingent of 80 youths left Charleston for Fort Knox, Ky., with further departures planned each of the next three Sundays.
West Virginia Governor William C. Marland toured Chicago business leaders to promote his state as an ideal site for expanding industry. He planned further stops in Wisconsin cities Sheboygan and Appleton to outline advantages for industry relocation and growth.
Maria Tallchief, famed prima ballerina of the New York Ballet, wed Henry Paschen Jr of a Chicago construction family in Wilmette on Sunday. It was Tallchiefs third marriage and Paschen's second.
Baltimore police report recovering 4635 dollars believed to be part of the 1950 Brink’s robbery haul totaling over 1.2 million. Investigators found the money in a hotel room associated with a man previously arrested for passing a suspicious bill.

Dr. Walter B. Goff of Dunbar was elected president of the West Virginia Osteopathic Society at the annual convention in Charleston. New officers include Frank B. Pick of South Charleston as president elect, Earl Lyons of Elkins as vice president, and Guy E. Morris of Clarksburg as secretary-treasurer.
