Horrible death of steel plant worker in slag pile disaster
In Johnstown Pennsylvania a 21 year old World War II veteran John Smatlak Jr. fell into a slag pile crash and burned to death. A nearby slug train engineer William H Slick reported he vanished after appearing. Officials said the pile may be searched with a power shovel if coal is cool enough. The accident is described as the most horrible in Bethlehem Steel history.

The bus struck a tractor trailer that halted at the garage, delaying about a dozen riders for an hour until another bus arrived from Clarksburg to continue service. Eleven Drowned as Ore Boat Emperor Sinks Off Isle Royale
