Mystery Deepens in Keene Death on the Potomac
The Keene case unsettles relatives and crew aboard the steamer. J B Eby recalls giving change from a five dollar bill, but no money is found on waterlogged clothes and only a nickel is recovered in the room. Three 32 calibre bullets are found in Keene’s vest and a pistol once owned by him is missing. Bowen, the steamer’s chief engineer, heard a possible gunshot around 1 45 a m as Keene vanished. Fishermen’s rope knots on the body prompt theories that a seaman tied them. The Potomac remains the center of a mounting mystery.
