The city plans immediate repairs to Grafton Park with banks fixed and pavilion rebuilt following April high waters. Officials promise to restore the park to its pre flood condition as soon as feasible, with permanent work scheduled after dam completion.
Three Grafton High School seniors were honored at last night’s commencement in the Washington Street auditorium. Valedictorian Marianna Collins declined a West Virginia Wesleyan College scholarship, while Joseph Mahaffey received the Wesleyan scholarship in her place. Ball will attend Lem College and Carlyle Smith Davis and Elkins College. Dean L A Peckstein of Cincinnati awaited as the commencement speaker.
In Pontiac Michigan thousands of tenants join a rent strike staged by United Automobile Workers organizers. Landlords dispute the action noting rents are already rising since 1928 and plan eviction defenses as trials approach. Local officials caution the dispute may shift between landlord and tenant lines.
The eastern seaboard sweltered in unseasonably hot weather while the middle west saw milder readings. A front spiked forecasts for thunderstorms. Philadelphia reached 90, with 82 at 9 am, while Washington and New York tracked high 80s. Upstate Albany was cooler, and officials warned of hotter day ahead.

Ed R. Cole life member did not attend Prosperity Lodge No. 308 Elks session. The award rose to 13 dollars from the 11 dollar prize previously offered. Large attendance to hear the first use of new sound equipment in the lodge ritual work.
A June report from Elizabeth City notes polished decorative baby turtles about the size of a silver dollar have become popular in large cities as pets. The chamber of commerce lists requirements that turtles be housebroken tame and affectionate, with restrictions noted by secretary C. C. Meade.
Outsider Mid-Day Sun surprises by winning the 158th Derby at Epsom Downs driven from behind in the final yards. Perifox, joint favorite with Cash Book, fades to finish fourth after a strong start amid a crowd of 250 000 to 500 000 spectators. Sand Sprite finishes second with Le Grand Duc third.

Co editor Margaret Kellar, secretary to former Governor Cornwell, had worked with him.
Militant labor forces and the steel giants clash as Republic Steel continues to push production in strike-locked plants. In Youngstown 21,000 workers are kept at work and daily output tops 7,000 tons as authorities guard facilities. Public and private officials warn of violence as police and guards tighten barricades amid reports of gunfire and rippling unrest.
Buckhannon June 2 The honorary degree of doctor of humane letters was conferred today upon Bishop Adna Wright Leonard of the Pittsburgh district of the Methodist Episcopal church at West Virginia Wesleyan college commencement. Dr McConkey principal of Washington-Irving High school Clarksburg was granted the degree of doctor of pedagogy and Rev John E Hanifan pastor of the Moundsville Methodist Episcopal church the degree of doctor of divinity. Seventy graduates heard an address by Dr Charles R Brown dean-emeritus of Yale Divinity school.
Amelia Earhart and navigator Capt. Fred J. Noonan landed at Cari pito Venezuela at 10 18 a m EST after flying from San Juan Puerto Rico. They planned an overnight stay at the Standard Oil guest house and a tomorrow takeoff for Paramaribo with a probable route toward Natal via Para Brazil as part of a round the world flight near the equator.
New York on June 2 reports 12 year old William Schwartz brushed an 11 000 volt tension wire and fell unconscious on New York New Haven and Hartford tracks. Police revived him after several minutes and he uttered I am all right don't tell my mother. His father had just died.
West Virginia towns and villages began official ballot canvasses after June 1 elections. Friendly in Tyler County elected an all women slate led by Mayor Stella Eddy. Mabscott elected Dr. D. L. Hill to his tenth two year term. Many mayors reelected, littleton race mirrored party lines with R. R. Stewart winning by two votes over R. R. Bush.
A. N. Stewart was reelected to his seventh term as Flemington mayor with no opposition. Recorder Stanley Fleming was also chosen in a quiet county village election with no opposing candidates, marking a peaceful local vote.
Voting was light in Rowlesburg as A A Pickering, prominent Preston County merchant, won the mayoralty without contest. The council seats went to Perry Ayersman Charles Burkhalter Chauncey Heath Samuel McVicker and Dwight M Wilds with M D Hooten renamed recorder of the village.
In Monts France on June 2 a northern England parson defies church resistance to wed the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Warfield. Rev R Anderson Jardine will bless their marriage at a wedding ceremony following a civil service at Chateau De Cande. An unknown caller insisted the minister proceed with the ceremony despite earlier doubts about ecclesiastical consecration.
