Grafton treated yesterday morning to one of the most elaborate and colorful Memorial Day parades in decades. The mile long procession moved with clock like precision from Washington Street to Walnut street burying grounds in 45 minutes led by Chief of Police A. E. Vockard, with city women, the Sons of the American Legion Drum and Bugle corps, and Captain E. G. Kuhn guiding the march. Two Civil War veterans John I. Hoffman and Alpheus Wilson, 96 and 95, rode with their sons Ed N. Lock and Ona C Jefferys in the first official car as cheers greeted the survivors near the National cemetery.

First Civil War Victim Remembered At Memorial Day Service
Memorial Day services in the National cemetery recalled the death of the Civil War’s first victim Bailey Brown who lies buried there. Edna Allen Wright of Bellaire, formerly of this county, wrote a poem about West Virginia history. Brown was killed near the Fetterman end of a bridge over the Tygart Valley River, now First Ward of Grafton. His body was reinterred in a lonely hilltop graveyard near Flemington about ten miles away.
