Russians Name Two Year Plan to Absorb Berlin

Berlin reports the Communist dominated SED issued a two year plan to integrate Berlin's economy with the eastern Soviet zone. The plan targets Berlin’s economy while warning against hope in the western air lift. U.S. Air Force ferried coal and food into Western Berlin amid Russian warnings as 115 flights delivered 610 tons of supplies in 18 hours.

Coal Mines in West Virginia Return to Operation Boosts Output

West Virginia soft coal fields show momentum as unofficial figures place total employed at 85,000 of 120,000 with about 15,000 still idle in captive mines. Two Boys Ordered to Court for School Fire Plot

In Harrison on July 7 two grade school students aged 9 and 11 were ordered to appear in children's court on charges they attempted to burn their school building. Detectives quote the youths saying they started the fire to ensure they would not return to school in the fall, with about $4,000 in damage reported on Sunday night.

Maniacal killer sought today in Baltimore suburb

Baltimore police mobilized to search the northern suburbs for the so called maniacal killer of 11 year old Marsha Brill who was stabbed while bicycling with two friends near Pimlico. A 30 year old man was arrested after emerging from woods and identified in a lineup by two children who witnessed the assault. A second man was later questioned in connection with the crime.

Philadelphia July 7 President Truman's aides moved to block gallery attempts to start a nomination stampede at the Democratic convention. Convention sergeant at arms Leslie L. Biffle said 80 Philadelphia police and up to 50 private detectives would guard galleries to prevent delegates from being influenced. He warned of efforts to stampede the convention and noted past gallery pressure at the Willkie nomination.

Washington July 7 government lawyers rushed to prepare court action to stop a 24 hour old strike by 49 000 miners in captive coal mines. Steel producers halted operations amid fuel shortages as they dispute a union shop clause and wage terms in a United Mine Workers contract. Denham of the National Labor Relations Board gathered affidavits from union and company lawyers as he weighed a formal complaint before nightfall.

Sympathy walkouts idling Western Pennsylvania coal pits

Western Pennsylvania and surrounding states faced sympathy strikes in soft coal mines as diggers halted work. About a quarter of 400,000 soft coal miners nationwide were idle, with 13,000 idle in West Virginia’s commercial mines and 1,500 in Indiana. Some mines remained on despite end of day vacations while others awaited a wage agreement and potential court action in Washington.
