In Rome Tyrone Power and Linda Christian wed amid a roaring crowd and royal guests. Police, diplomats, and thousands watched as the couple tied the knot in Santa Fra Romana despite ongoing divorce questions.
The Huntington Weather Bureau warns residents along the Ohio River from Parkersburg to Portsmouth Ohio to expect flooding. Meteorologist Leroy Stone says water will reach or go beyond flood level though how much beyond is undetermined. Rain continues over Monongaalia and Ohio river watersheds with more heavy rain possible today tonight and tomorrow. The wettest point in West Virginia recently was Flat Top in Southern Raleigh county.
The Taylor County Post 12 American Legion won final approval to purchase late W A Beavers Sr property at 205 McGraw Avenue for a new lodge home. An agreement to deed within days was signed. Remodeling will convert the Beavers house into a grill room and meeting space with upstairs for the Ladies Auxiliary and potential dining area. current Latrobe Street home plans not yet made public.
Elkins January 27 details emerge of Tucker county mountain ordeal in which three boys vanished. John Helmick the lone survivor, aged fifteen, recounts carrying Robert Carr and keeping him warm with pine branches. Both feet were later amputated due to frostbite. Helmick gifted his pocket knife to Sheriff Croston as thanks.
Charleston January 27 Democratic Delegate Rush D Holt of Weston warned that if the current state budget is approved the state faces either a deficit or new taxes. He blasted revenue estimates as inflated to prop up top heavy appropriations. Holt did not comment on Governor Pattesons message, but said wild estimates mean a deficit before 1950 ends.
Charleston January 27 lawmakers in the 1949 legislature consider Governor Okey Patteson's proposals for state aid to counties for schools higher salaries for state workers and a four year medical and dental school. The plan faces funding uncertainty with 50 million dollars in bonds until a financing method is defined. Senate President W Broughton Johnston praised the program while opponents call for specifics. Also 28 bills were introduced including a constitutional amendment to allow women on juries.
The State Conservation Commission will run the docking facilities and concessions at Tygart Lake State Park this spring and summer. The move, disclosed in a letter to Charles Casner of the Tygart Lake Development Corporation, aims to place the park under closer state control and reduce local operation risk. The development group had previously managed the boating docks but welcomed the shift due to rapid growth and expanding duties.
Hazel Brown, 19, was placed on probation for five years after pleading guilty to taking part in the cattle truck hijacking near Arnettsville in August. Her husband Earl Brown and John Bigler, already serving 10-year terms, were involved. Probation officials will supervise her from a relative’s home in Painesville, Ohio, with violations risking the 10-year sentence.
The forecast predicts more rain across the Grafton area tonight with mild temperatures. Snow flurries are expected Friday night as temperatures rise to 60 yesterday and fall to 42 last night. Blueville weather station logged 46 degrees at 1 p.m. today.
The State Board of Education rejected the lowest bid of six for a West Virginia State College library building in Institute, saying 688000 is too high. Funds of 625000 had been set aside. The board approved campus telephone upgrades and sought bids for a central heating plant at the state deaf and blind school in Romney, with bids opening February 22. It also approved Marshall College alterations plans by Architect Lewis Settler Huntington, and appointed Carl Leiden as political science professor effective second semester, replacing Leo Oxley. Glenville State College will build a farm house and enlarge the auditorium stage, with bids to be requested.

The chamber also considers Albert Loveland of Iowa for undersecretary of agriculture Army Secretary Royall warned of possible war and urged adequate forces The Armed Services Committee weighs 70 Air Force groups while Truman seeks 48 groups Efforts fail to settle leadership of the Republican national committee with Hugh Scott likely to face a committee vote in Omaha Nebraska Also nominated were William McChesney Martin Jr to be assistant secretary of the treasury Mark Ethridge to Palestine conciliation Dr Karl Kempton MIT named chairman of the research and development board Donald Carpenter CT named chairman of the munitions board A former State Road Maintenance Supervisor Frank Dunham 68, of Martinsburg, will be buried today after a six month illness.
Washington January 27 President Truman asked Congress for a one million dollar blizzard disaster fund and said $200,000 had been made available yesterday for western state relief. The Senate raised the relief ask to three million dollars while the House approved a half million. Truman criticized landlords resisting tenant protections and warned against evictions to block rent control. He cited steel price concerns after U S Steel announced a dividend and stock split as proof of inflationary pressures. The present total disaster fund was reduced to about $50,000 after recent allocations. See PRESIDENT page 2.
Grafton merchants were urged by the Junior Chamber of Commerce to contribute about 3000 toward a 6500 goal for a street flusher. Jaycees have raised 1500. 5000 more is sought with 2000 to be raised by the group. Calvin Morrison said early spring purchase aims to serve Easter cleanup. A ten day February drive is planned with dollar tag days and business-house appeals. See MERCHANTS page 6
The Woman's Hospital Auxiliary in Grafton launches a fundraising drive approved by the Taylor County Board of Trade to remodel the nurse's home. Plans include a new kitchen, interior painting, and purchases for gowns and sewing materials for the children's wards. The group has already funded a walkway and driveway, with R. W. Hood as chair and a committee listing several members.
West Virginia ex governor Clarence Meadows says he knows as much about criminal law as the Ohio prosecutor who criticized him for failing to surrender Homer Jack Dean. Ohio seeks Dean for first degree murder in the slaying of Elmo C. Rice. Dean is serving a WV life term as an habitual criminal.
Members of the House Committee on Humane Institutions will inspect Weston State Hospital this weekend. The four member subcommittee is led by Delegate Byrd from Raleigh county and includes Phillips of Mingo county Powell of Hampshire and Doyle of Ohio county.
