Du Pont doubts dry laws add to U S prosperity

W S Kelly of United Fuel Gas testified before the Public Service Commission that pipe sections admitted in the southern West Virginia gas rate case came from lines built between 1898 and 1907. He noted the sections were extracted from lines at various points.

Woman Held In Husband's Death After Poison Plot

Anamosa Iowa February 27 a 40 year old woman and a 60 year old farmer faced first degree murder charges in the death of the woman's husband Cecil Miner. Mrs Hilda Miner hospitalized recovering from poison and a heart attack linked to the incident. Albert Hartwig held in jail after confessing to buying poison and giving it to Mrs Miner though he denied knowledge of the intended use.

Autopsy Plans Meet Opposition in Sevier suit

Honolulu February 27 authorities anticipated an injunction by Col Granville Sevier to stop an autopsy on his wife Marion Shainwald Irvington heiress in the controversy over reopening the investigation into her death. Geo H Putnam Dies in New York City at 85

Geo Haven Putnam, 85, president of Putnam's Sons, publishers, died today in New York City after two weeks of illness from pernicious anemia. A Civil War veteran, he rose from private to major in the 176th New York volunteers and helped lead the American Copyright League in 1887. He founded the English-speaking Union in the United States and was honored with the Legion of Honor cross.

Taft in Critical Condition with No Hope of Recovery

Washington February 27 AP Physicians attending William Howard Taft said there was no hope for his recovery with a serious change for the worse since yesterday. Dr Hagner called to the bedside reported Taft in a critical condition and said any improvement would be minor. The end might come at any hour, or he might live for a few days. Helen Taft Manning remained with Mrs Taft as news noted a general breakdown from ailments that had long kept him bedridden. Officials cautioned against expecting a recovery while the nation followed the old chief justice’s decline.

Washington reports a slight wheat price uptick aided by the Grain Stabilization Corporation and Farmers National Grain, while the federal Farm Board maintains support for cooperatives. Deposed Shah of Persia Dies in Paris Hospital

Paris February 27 Ahmed deposed Shah of Persia dies today in the American Hospital after a year of illness. The former shah, 92, was reputed to be one of the wealthiest men in the world. After his deposition in 1975 he spent most of his time in Paris. A local notice warns that letting chickens roam is illegal under city ordinances with fines for violations.

House anxious for debate on muted subject

Marketing Unit Formed by Northern West Virginia Coal Companies

Pittsburgh Feb 27 A marketing unit formed by coal companies in northern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania aims to annually mark output of bituminous coal rivaling the largest producers. The unit comes from a sales department merger of five firms led by Continental Coal Company with mines in northern West Virginia and includes Henderson Coal Company Gliefters Greek Coal Company Duquesne Coke and Superior Mining Company. The four latter companies operate in the Pittsburgh district.
