Governor Cooper denied Dr. James H. Snook's stay of execution and clemency plea. A board of clemency review was underway as Snook, former Ohio State University professor, seeks mercy. Officials indicated a decision would come soon amid appeals to commute the death sentence.
Detroit report of underworld gun attack on Alfonso Sirica attorney for James Ferrando in Jackie Thompson kidnapping case. Forty shots wounded Sirica who died by hospital and police seek ties to killings of two Italian colony members, linking to Arthur Califano and Roy Gennaro as associates.
Five miners were killed and twenty injured by a blast in Lyme Pit near Haydock Lancashire on February 26 night. Rescue efforts continued as responders sought more information on the accident.
Associated Press report on February hearings where Pierre S. Du Pont of Delaware questions if repeal or modification of the Volstead Act would improve national prosperity. He proposes state liquor commissions as a possible method of better control, and says the nation should avoid actions with dishonest intent. Du Pont was the first witness as opposition to prohibition presents its case.
W S Kelly of United Fuel Gas testified before the Public Service Commission that pipe sections admitted in the southern West Virginia gas rate case came from lines built between 1898 and 1907. He noted the sections were extracted from lines at various points.
Anamosa Iowa February 27 a 40 year old woman and a 60 year old farmer faced first degree murder charges in the death of the woman's husband Cecil Miner. Mrs Hilda Miner hospitalized recovering from poison and a heart attack linked to the incident. Albert Hartwig held in jail after confessing to buying poison and giving it to Mrs Miner though he denied knowledge of the intended use.
Honolulu February 27 authorities anticipated an injunction by Col Granville Sevier to stop an autopsy on his wife Marion Shainwald Irvington heiress in the controversy over reopening the investigation into her death. Sevier withdrew permission for disinterment held by Sheriff Patrick Gleason and warned he would be liable for damages. Continued Page Three.
In Santo Domingo insurgent forces gained near total control as President Vasquez sought refuge in the American legation and Vice President Alfonseca resigned. General Trujillo's small garrison held Fort Ozama amid bombardment while Charles B. Curtis mediated negotiations to avert bloodshed and property damage.
London Feb 27 The MacDonald government won a tight 280 vote margin on its coal bill in the house of commons after a close December 20 second reading. A separate report notes political unease over a possible government resignation and election if the bill fails.
Geo Haven Putnam, 85, president of Putnam's Sons, publishers, died today in New York City after two weeks of illness from pernicious anemia. A Civil War veteran, he rose from private to major in the 176th New York volunteers and helped lead the American Copyright League in 1887. He founded the English-speaking Union in the United States and was honored with the Legion of Honor cross.
The second district of the West Virginia Pythians opens its regional meeting in Castle Hall Friendship Lodge No 8 at 8 o clock with offers from two other districts. Grand officials including Thomas J Neale O J Rife and W W Long will speak along with seven past Grand Commanders.
Washington February 27 AP Physicians attending William Howard Taft said there was no hope for his recovery with a serious change for the worse since yesterday. Dr Hagner called to the bedside reported Taft in a critical condition and said any improvement would be minor. The end might come at any hour, or he might live for a few days. Helen Taft Manning remained with Mrs Taft as news noted a general breakdown from ailments that had long kept him bedridden. Officials cautioned against expecting a recovery while the nation followed the old chief justice’s decline.
Ukiah California February 27 Northern California medical authorities are puzzled over the condition of John Harvey 14 who today had been unconscious 524 hours after being struck by an automobile Dr Sterling Sunnell San Francisco operated on the youth Tuesday to relieve pressure on the brain believed responsible for his coma of more than 21 days but his condition was reported unchanged Resort was made to food injections to provide nourishment.
Washington reports a slight wheat price uptick aided by the Grain Stabilization Corporation and Farmers National Grain, while the federal Farm Board maintains support for cooperatives. Independent dealers protest a 10 to 12 cent premium paid to cooperatives, but the door remains open for independents to join cooperative groups.
Paris February 27 Ahmed deposed Shah of Persia dies today in the American Hospital after a year of illness. The former shah, 92, was reputed to be one of the wealthiest men in the world. After his deposition in 1975 he spent most of his time in Paris. A local notice warns that letting chickens roam is illegal under city ordinances with fines for violations.

Pittsburgh Feb 27 A marketing unit formed by coal companies in northern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania aims to annually mark output of bituminous coal rivaling the largest producers. The unit comes from a sales department merger of five firms led by Continental Coal Company with mines in northern West Virginia and includes Henderson Coal Company Gliefters Greek Coal Company Duquesne Coke and Superior Mining Company. The four latter companies operate in the Pittsburgh district.
