Gov Kump delays selection of the three member liquor control commission to oversee state stores and pricing under a new monopoly law. He stressed the need for integrity and ability in appointees, noting no more than two from any one party and that the governor must appoint before proceeding.
Storms lash seas worldwide with many ships missing off France and Spain. The Bay of Biscay remains the focal point of the damaging gales as at least a dozen vessels report distress or drift toward port. A 248 ton freighter Derby loses steering near Portugal while en route to West Africa, and the British Hillcroft hovers nearby awaiting rescue. A 12 910 ton German steamer sent an urgent signal off Villano as waves toss her in the storm.

Washington reports the Social Security bill faces a shaky path as Congress slows to a crawl. Secretary Ickes predicts passage of the $4,880,000,000 work and relief measure without the prevailing wage amendment, while unemployment estimates show 10,830,000 out of work in December. The administration hopes states will adopt security laws in line with federal goals, framing a coordinated relief plan amid adjournments and mounting fiscal scrutiny.
A Taylor county circuit court directed verdict favors William Bolyard and four co-defendants striking plaintiff R. B. Knight's evidence. Knight had won $300 in a justice court for the alleged tearing down of a Blue Eagle sign at 227 West Main Street in Knottsville district on April 20, 1934.
In Greenup Kentucky February 26 two men, Clifford Belford aged 24 of Little Sandy Creek and Bud Brumfield aged 26 of Worthington Kentucky, died when their boat sank in the Ohio River. A third man, C T Birch, 26, of Haverhill Ohio, was rescued after staying afloat as the swift current swept him a mile downstream.
Charleston February 26 The Supreme Court ruled that the police civil service board of Huntington may not demote an officer without reasonable cause stated in writing. The decision stems from the suit of W B Harris a former lieutenant of police against the city.
Hope was abandoned for 28 persons believed lost after a motor launch capsized three miles off St Lucia. Excursionists were part of a 102 passenger party when the craft overturned in shark infested waters of the Caribbean.
Owensboro, Ky. February 26. Albert F. Laub was reroofing a hotel cupola when he found a bird's nest made entirely of small wire pieces. No twig or string was used. The find amazed workers and locals, illustrating unusual all metal construction by the birds.
Police and Baltimore and Ohio detectives arrested William T. Holmes a 27 year old transient and gained a full confession of crimes since January 21 He admitted the telephone booth pay station robberies at the B and O passenger station February 21 and at Clarksburg February 24 Also linked to the break in at Mrs William Adlington 111 Lugadder Street Holmes loitered in the B and O ladies rest room and peered into a Latrobe Street private residence The report notes the case continues on page six
Pittsburgh February 26 Magistrate Anthony Luces questioned a prisoner in a bookie raid and asked if he bet. The man claimed no time to bet, the judge suggested turning over $2500 as if he had lost, and then dismissed the case after the man proposed a different settlement.
In Kansas City on February 26, Transient Bureau clerk Miss Lolita Appleton denied operating a shop as she handed out beads and thread to hundreds of hungry hitch hikers, while an elderly traveler and a man questioned the service.
Harry A. Bowers assistant chief clerk at the Grafton Railway Mail Service office died after a sudden angina attack in the post office rooms shortly after 8 am. He had felt unwell at home on Virginia Avenue Blueville last night but felt better this morning and went to the post office before collapsing. Continued on page 6.
Waynesburg Pa February 26 Crago editor of a Carmichaels weekly is charged with criminal libel by John D Meyer deputy state attorney general The indictment follows a magistrate hearing where Meyer said the weekly printed an article alleging pay to quash a liquor case years ago
Jodie T. Lloyd and Lacy Wingfield conspired to escape, but jailer Walter Enloe thwarted the plot by removing Lloyd’s artificial leg and stripping the pair to underclothes. Lloyd stood on one leg in the cold, deciding the bid was not worth it.
Charleston February 26 A West Virginia dairy council bill would create a five member board with broad power over milk production distribution and sale. The governor appoints three members while the two commissioners and a producer group select the rest. Exempts five cows or fewer. Tax exemption amendment also advances, with vote expected in today's 2 pm session.
In Taylor county circuit court this morning, two defendants pleaded guilty to indictments charging operation of a gambling house. Fred Hickshan, proprietor of the Prosperity, paid a $100 fine plus costs, and Domenick Lobis, Prosperity employee, was fined $50 and costs after pleas by their attorney W Merley Watkins. A third defendant, Robert Bolliger, has not been apprehended since the grand jury returned the indictment.
Pawnee Oklahoma February 26 Phil Kennamer 19 son of Federal Judge Franklin E Kennamer will be sent to the state prison March 5 to begin a 25 year manslaughter sentence for the slaying of John F Gorrell His attorneys will not seek bond they expect the conviction to be reversed and for him to walk free from the McAllister penitentiary in a few months says defense attorney B Stuart
Grafton's liquor dispensary to be opened after March 1 will be located on the first floor of the Taylor County Bank building. State Senator J. Patrick Beacom suggested locating state stores in a closed building. Arrangements for leasing the quarters and staffing the store are to be completed within the week.
Ithaca February 26 Cornell University announced an odorless cabbage after six years and four thousand plants. Professor C H Myers bred away the familiar odor using a pollen method in greenhouses and cold storage to produce seed stock for market. A limited group of seed growers will assist in mass production.
In Mayfield Kentucky on February 26 the property director faced a challenge when a 408 pound newspaper reporter Nathan Yates was cast as a mountain lassie in a home talent play. The solution involved dressing him in a workmanlike costume to fit the role.
Heavy rains last night slowed progress on the Tygart Valley river flood control dam project. Frederick corporation officials cited weather as delaying peak efficiency while noting steady progress on the foundation excavation for the mixing plant and a construction bridge extending above the east bank cofferdam.
Harold W. Vermilyen of Ontario California was found guilty of killing his 76 year old mother Aurelia Vermilyea with a hatchet in Belleville Ontario and sentenced to death by hanging on May 2. Justice Nicol Jeffrey presided with a jury of nine farmers delivering a verdict without mercy. The victim was murdered October 4 last year.
Bruno Hauptmann's counsel started today the preparation of reasons for seeking reversal in the Lindbergh kidnapping murder trial. The appeal is being perfected from the complete trial record obtained yesterday from the attorney general's office as Hauptmann remains confined.
Galax Virginia February 26 arrest made after a four day manhunt through Carroll and Grayson counties for ard Delp accused of killing Chief Posey Martin Delp was captured near Wilksboro and brought back to Galax where a murder charge stands against him Police say Delp and Dave Leonard shared a Galax jail cell last Thursday Leonard had bail arranged and Delp attacked officers when Martin opened the jail door to free him continuing to page four.
Berlin reports a sharp drop in US sales to Germany with American exports shrinking from 15.1 million dollars in January 1934 to 2.6 million in December and German sales in the United States falling from 86.5 million to about 5.5 million, prompting a complaint from the American colony in Berlin.
