Pennsylvania advocates push for a southern leg of the Pennsylvania Turnpike to connect Erie with the West Virginia Turnpike through the Monongahela Valley. The Waynesburg Chamber of Commerce forms the Greene County Planning action, uniting Upper Monongahela groups to press for an Erie to Gulf highway and the Lakeland Expressway feeding the region’s 4900 industries.
National Boy Scouts leader Howard Lord will preside at a district conference in Grafton from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. George K. Myers, National Director of Public Relationships, will address attendees and outline international and regional civic ties of the Boy Scouts of America.
A Baltimore and Ohio freight train derailed at Oakland Maryland blocking the Cumberland division. The three unit diesel locomotive and 21 empty coal cars derailed. 64 other cars stayed on tracks. The Diplomat passenger train from St. Louis to Washington was delayed five hours with no injuries reported. Cause of wreck undetermined.
Bad weather halted a scheduled giant atomic explosion at the Nevada test site. In Toronto a serial arsonist set fire to costly cars for the seventh time downtown Tuesday night.
A Trans World Airlines Constellation carrying 30 passengers and a 6 member crew skidded on a rain slicked runway at LaGuardia and toppled into an earthen dyke by the East River. No injuries were reported by the airline spokesman.
A West Virginia House bill aims to raise about 751000 yearly by ending the 25 gallon exemption on fuel in truck tanks and imposing seven cents a gallon on gasoline and 11 cents on diesel imported for state use, with credits for fuel bought in state. Legislation also advances Crozet Transcontinental Highway study and staged construction from Harpers Ferry to the Kentucky border via Charleston, Braxton County, and Heaters.
Disynal cooler air remains in the Tri County area with little change expected tomorrow. Yesterday’s high reached 54 despite rain, then fell to 34 last night. The United States accepted an invitation to participate in an atoms for peace conference at Geneva next summer, joining 10 Soviet bloc nations and 73 other countries. Akron Ohio 9 000 workers walked off the job over a new contract causing all three B F Goodrich Co plants to halt operations. Union leaders said the strike began today and could affect production and shipments across the area.
In Toronto, Liberal-Labor member Albert Wren recalled a man being ejected from a bar for ordering tomato juice. Wren argued patrons should be free to choose non alcoholic drinks, criticizing bars for pushing customers around.
Paris reports Radical Socialist Eduard Faure demands National Assembly backing for a rapid German rearmament ratification and negotiations with Communists in Europe and Asia. He aims to solidify a right of center coalition after Mendes France's fall, pinning hopes on a three-point crisis plan: ratify German parliament, grant autonomy for Tunisia, and a three-year social program for workers.
