Football's gloom forecast for top and subs in 1949
Eagles general manager Charley Ewart warned that top players like Steve Baner, Tommy Thompson, and Pete Pibb will likely keep good contracts but substitutes and rookies face cuts as owners seek to trim costs. He cited reducing club rosters from 35 to 32 and lowering second and third string salaries, saving about $20,000 per team annually while veterans fade from pay scales.

Marshall to Decide Next Week on Suspensions
HUNTINGTON, Dec. 29. Marshall college will decide next week what action to take regarding suspensions of two varsity basketball players. The State Collegiate Conference Eligibility committee ruled at Clarksburg that Gene James and Jim Bakalis were ineligible for further play after competing in an independent tournament last March. Norman Willey, beaten 78-39 by Pepperdine in a Los Angeles Invitational game, was cleared of similar charges. James and Bakalis started last night's game despite the ruling. President Stewart H. Smith declined further comment beyond the action being reviewed.

Marshall's Schedule Sparked by Ineligible James
Colebank told a newsman that James, a former Stonewall Jackson high school star in Charleston, was found ineligible amid evidence from Morris Harvey and Marshall College. The lanky guard is a sparkplug for the Marshall lineup, a leading scorer in the Big. The piece also notes farm housing with modern bathrooms rising since 1940 and mentions Santa Clara's tallest player Bob Sunderland, six four, alongside a note on the Cog Railway begun in 1869 and the queen angel fish.
