Arch J. Alexander was named by Governor Patteson to a new four year term as Mines Chief beginning January 1. The term runs through December 31, 1953. Alexander, who first took the post January 1, 1947, filled the unexpired term of G. R. Spindler. Spindler later returned to duties at West Virginia University. Prior to his state appointment Alexander led the Appalachian Coal and Lumber company. His reappointment followed a push by United Mine Workers District 29 for his removal. About 1500 district members at Beckley drafted a resolution in March 1948 seeking Alexander’s ouster. District President George J. Titler then blamed the industry’s accident record on the non union.

Christmas Eve Burglary Hits Don's Den On Grafton Morgantown Road

Six Carried To Safety From Smoke Filled Building
Three mothers and three children, two infants, were carried to safety from the smoke filled third floor by firemen using gas masks. Fire Captain L M Sturgeon said an overheated incinerator sent nauseous fumes up the building and made stairways impassable. The building did not burn. Terra Alta Family Aided By Widow Furnishes Home
A 12 member Terra Alta family became homeless on Christmas Day when their farm home burned. Ruth Wolfe, an invalid widow who had closed her house for winter, gave them a fully furnished, rent free home for the first month. The Danson family farm was destroyed by flames at about 10 a.m. while they attended church. No injuries were reported.
