Honolulu dispatch reports a $2,000 territorial tax bill on the Oahu Railway and Land Company line used by the navy. Congress failed to appropriate $1 that would have funded the Pearl Harbor branch, leaving the Navy under a lease to cover taxes. If the government owned the line it would be tax free.
The old Weirton St plant in Clarksburg was sold for 35000 to the West Virginia Tractor and Equipment company of Charleston. The Clarksburg development corporation, a chamber affiliate, announced the sale after the plant’s ten year lease with National Distilling and cessation of operations by the steel company.
Mrs Norman Cole, 39, gave birth to her 16th child, a daughter, at home in Woodbury Connecticut last night. Thirteen of the children were born there and all but one are living. The father, a scrap metal dealer, comes from a large family with 14 siblings himself.
Santa Claus part of a Christmas gesture by Illinois Central Train No 81 crew halted the fast freight for about 20 minutes to visit Vivian Miller 12 Gloria 11 and Lorraine 4 at their home. Engineer Ross Brewster from Centralia and conductor O H Kennedy from Duquoin presented 26 one dollar pills to the children in thanks for their smiles at No 81 and other trains.
The Pennsylvania Railroad failed to locate a young traveler warned of a poison containing medicine. A midnight PA system broadcast was halted and 448 staff were ordered to search for the traveler en route from California toward New York with his mother. his identity remains unknown.
In Fairmont a car swerved off the highway at Worthington and plunged into the West Fork river. Harry Rice, 50, of Enter, was trapped in the automobile and drowned. He was an act painter.
In Thousand Oaks California a trained lion named Sultan killed Mrs May Kovar Schafer 2 in a cage where she was training the animal. Her children Michael 18 and May 14 watched as the lion lunged bit her neck and severed the spine. The children rushed the cage with poles but the beast held on. Authorities investigated the deadly incident at the facility.
In Charleston West Virginia soft coal miners plan a two day work week for two weeks around Christmas and New Year. United Mine Workers District 31 President Cecil Urbaniak says workers will stay home December 26 and January 2, working only Tuesday and Wednesday. District 17 President William Buzzard says holiday observance is policy since Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Sunday, though no formal orders exist.
Gene Gillam 25 year old Stamford coal miner held in Raleigh county jail in default of $1000 bond awaiting grand jury action on rape charge. An 18 year old Eceles resident says she was raped last Thursday night on a road near Stamford school. Gillam was held after a preliminary hearing.
Washington reports United States banned travel by Americans to Hungary and considers closing Hungarian consulates in New York and Cleveland. The embargo followed a protest note over treatment of Americans, urging prompt release of Robert Vogel and noting the Budapest arrest of Israel Jacobson of the American Joint Distribution Committee.
Eighteen-year terms were imposed yesterday on two men for robbing the Fallsesbee bank and already serving 35 years for a Baltimore bank robbery. Henry Richard DeMoss was ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination at the Ashland reformatory and reappear in federal court January 7. Burnett and Close received concurrent 18 year sentences with their Baltimore robbery terms and pled guilty to the $7,000 holdup.
Dr. Charles E. Hamner will resign as superintendent of Spencer State Hospital effective February 1 and return to Columbus as administrative assistant to the president. He had previously served as superintendent here for two years before moving to Columbus in 1947 and returning to Spencer in 1948 after Dr. Hawke’s departure.
In Tokyo the eight member Russian delegation stormed out of the Allied Four- Power Council refusing to discuss Soviet delays in repatriating Japanese war prisoners. General Kuzma Derevyanko argued the council had no business on the issue, as Chairman William Sebald overruled him. The exit followed a heated dispute over council procedure and the fate of 374,041 Japanese detainees.
The president's daughter Margaret Truman received enthusiastic ovations at Carnegie Hall where she performed several Christmas songs with Frank Black's orchestra. Critics praised her poise but noted her singing voice was not fully equal to her personality.
Dynamiters in Detroit targeted the CIO United Auto Workers headquarters last night. A bundle of 39 sticks of dynamite wrapped in tape and Christmas paper was found on a side stair, with two fuses burned to within an inch of detonation. The building was empty except for two night workers, but nearby General Motors personnel faced risk as investigators open a broader violence case against the auto union leadership.
Hollywood star Clark Gable wed Lady Sylvia Stanley, widow of Douglas Fairbanks Sr., in a surprise ceremony at a north of Santa Barbara guest ranch. They plan a Honolulu junket aboard the Lurline as a two to four week getaway before returning to Hollywood.
Baltimore and Ohio Railroad carloadings totaled 52 066 for the week ended December 17, down from 58 508 in the year-ago period. The prior week ending December 10 recorded 54 322 cars.
State Treasurer designate William H. Ansel Jr., 35, of Springfield Hampshire county, is named by Governor Patteson to replace the late R. E. Talbott. Former assistant attorney general since January, Ansel is a West Virginian University College of Law graduate and served as a Democratic delegate for Hampshire in 1943 1945 and 1947.
Milton Matthews was nominated as soliciting chairman for the 1950 Taylor County Farm Bureau membership drive announced by County Agent Ralph E. Fike. The drive targets 260 memberships with kits sent to solicitors and a dinner contest on January 5 at Andrews Methodist church. O E Lough, who sold nearly 100 memberships in 1949, will receive a cash gift from the Board of Directors. Other solicitors named include W M Brown, Raymond Stout, Bertha Montgomery, Truman B McVicker, Waitman Lough, Chester Sharps, Byron Ross, Lewis Stout, Lloyd Sayre, Ira Morris, Claire Woodyard, Clyde Satterfield, Glenn Zinn, Ed Lough, A N Allender, Red Post, Bernice Luzadder, John Thorn, Louie Riffee, Mary Humphreys, Rosemont, Brady Currey, and Aubrey Cooper.
James Crouser aged 23 was injured by an exploding shell in a single barrel 12 gauge shotgun in the Blueville orchard behind W R Shackelford home. He suffered a broken left rib under his heart a broken finger and a slight lung puncture. He will stay in the hospital the rest of the week. He is the son of Mr and Mrs A A Crouser of the city and works at Clarksburg Paper Company.
The State Board of Control plans to defer the apartment and storage building at the Industrial Home for Girls in Salem and construct only a physical education building. President Joe F Burdett said bids for the combined project exceeded 96000, making size reduction infeasible, and new bids for the PE building would be sought within two weeks.
Senate testimony by ex-FBI undercover agent John J. Huber alleges the Communist party used liquor and young women to attract U S servicemen to its cause. He described SOB Sweethearts of Servicemen and SOS club rooms where drinking and dancing were used to recruit and control soldiers, sailors, and graduates.
Grafton city leaders move toward building an incinerator with revenue bonds. City council orders city attorney to draft an ordinance increasing garbage fees from 75 cents to one dollar monthly per residence. Construction target set for July 1 next year, with no contract awarded yet.
First Lt. James Feehery a 27 year old Marine Corps reserve flyer from Detroit bailed out at 8000 feet as the Navy plane veered toward Beckley West Virginia after losing gas and becoming lost en route from Anacostia to Grosse Pointe. He landed safely three miles from the crash site.
Michael Chuman of Weirton West Virginia was injured in a collision on the north side of Pittsburgh and held at Allegheny General Hospital. Police said the car he rode in was reported stolen at Wheeling West Virginia.
Washington reports winter weather spreading from the upper Mississippi and Missouri Valleys to the Pacific. The coldest air plunged into the Dakotas and Minnesota, with 20 below in North Dakota and 10 below in Minnesota and South Dakota. Temperatures rose to 31 above in Phoenix and dropped to 25 in Albuquerque, while a Texas panhandle storm brought freezing rain across several states. Skies cleared in the sub zero belt, with light snow in Montana, Iowa, and New Mexico and light rain in the Pacific Northwest.
Two top Utah heavyweight hopefuls meet the retired champion Joe Louis in fourth round exhibitions in Salt Lake City. Rex Layne of Lewiston and Jay Lambert of West Jordan square off as Brown Bomber opponents, both national caliber stars from Utah’s past.
