Stuart Florida reports that William O Dwyer mayor of New York will marry Elizabeth Sloan Simpson Tuesday morning. The couple, both in hiding on a friend’s yacht, obtained a marriage license after O Dwyer left a penniless immigrant to rise as Gotham’s chief executive.
New York officials reported eight million residents tightened faucets saving nearly 11 gallons each, totaling about 90 million gallons for the city’s reservoirs. They hailed it as a dry water holiday and hoped the trend would continue without encouraging wasteful binges.
Busy Stephenson Veiga, 27, wife of Antonio Jayrink Veiga, 47, Brazilian industrialist, reported the theft of about $100,000 worth of jewels from a hotel honeymoon suite in Los Angeles. Logan Chamber of Commerce contends Eleanor Roosevelt misstated conditions in Logan County stating that for years coal families lived in tents evicted from homes and blacklisted. Fred Haislip, chamber president, demands apologies from Harper & Brothers and McCall's Magazine for the claim. He says there was no tent colony in Logan and notes miners numbering about 13,000.

In Huntington a 25 year old ex serviceman was treated at the Veterans Administration hospital after reportedly eating six or seven poisoned crackers. Police call it attempted death by his own action. Officers Robert Dean and Cecil Russell reported the seriousness of his condition.
Washington officials disclose that the administration plans to urge Congress to extend peacetime conscription for three more years. Secretary Johnson and Secretary Acheson will argue the extension is essential to national security and ongoing defense against communism. The current act expires June 24, with funding requested to run the draft machinery for youths 18 to 26.

Pittsburgh reports indicate most soft coal operators will pay the 20 cents per ton royalty to the United Mine Workers Health and Welfare fund next week under the expired contract. Lewis says Western Pennsylvania firms will pay, and most operators nationwide are expected to follow. The new contract sought would raise royalties to 35 cents a ton and miners’ daily wage to 15 dollars, up from 14.05. Mao Zedong arrived in Moscow amid talks with Stalin and officials as observers forecast a near certainty of a Chinese Soviet friendship pact. Both sides expected to discuss trade and mutual assistance during Mao’s first Moscow visit, with Stalin praised as key to strengthening peace and neighbors.
The 1951 Legislature will be asked to clarify state laws governing liquor and beer sales. The West Virginia Temperance League, led by Secretary L. J. Priestley, cites a Supreme Court ruling that reversed Beer Commissioner Burt Crow in Huntington’s Leverly Grill case. Crow had denied a license citing proximity to church and school, 157 and 186 feet away, and the high court called Crow’s decision arbitrary and capricious.

Eugene T. Ward, former Williamson West Virginia bank president, now runs an apparel shop in suburban Cincinnati, pleaded guilty to three counts violating federal banking laws and was sentenced to 18 months on each count, to be served concurrently by Judge Harry I Watkins. Separately, Judge Watkins also sentenced Smith, a former Stateway Agency clerk, who pleaded guilty to three charges of stealing cigarettes from malls.
John McMullen of 570 West Main Street Grafton is a plankowner and quartermaster third class USN aboard the USS Carpenter. He served aboard during the ship’s commissioning at Norfolk Naval Shipyard Portsmouth on Thursday December 15.
