Mossy cloudy forecast with light rain ending Sunday 5 p m. Highs in the 50s and lows near 19 to 38 in parts. Tygart Dam records show cloudy cooler conditions with highs around 56 and low 38. Today's 7 am and 11 am readings around the low 50s.
Registers jingled as shoppers flooded stores on a busy Christmas eve weekend. Police managed traffic snarls while merchants counted brisk sales and ample stocks to meet demand. Chief DeBarr noted the force could have been stretched to handle the crowd. Traffic remained heavy with parking in short supply.

Judge Carlos J. Harbert of Harrison County Criminal Court sentenced Lee Burkhamer of Clarksburg to the electric chair for the slaying of Charlene Vilain, 11, in Clarksburg. The crime occurred last May when Charlene was on an errand for her mother, a movie projectionist. Burkhamer, 24, pleaded guilty at the June term and sought mercy as the judge requested further evidence to review the case facts.
Inmates of the West Virginia Industrial School for Boys will enjoy a Christmas feast featuring turkey Waldorf salad cranberry sauce candy and fruit. Superintendent William Rollins said 100 of 264 boys will spend Christmas week at home December 20 to 27 as a reward for good behavior.
James Russell Kelso, 42, of 102 W. Washington Street, was arrested on a drunken driving charge by City Patrolmen Carl Hershman Earl Carruthers and Ernest Jenkins over the weekend. He crowded another Grat ton man off Barrett Street, was jailed in Taylor County, awaiting hearing in police court.
Temperatures will run about 10 degrees above the state average with highs near 42 and lows around 26. Warm spells appear Tue and Wed, cooler Thu and Fri, then warmer again Sat. Rain is expected Wed and near Sat with total rainfall around half to one inch.
Four accident victims remain in fair condition at Grafton Hospital after two weekend crashes in Taylor County. Robert Floyd, 27, sustained head lacerations and body injuries after veering through a fence and down a 450 foot embankment on East Grafton Road. Floyd faces reckless driving charges in Marion County where a hit and run warrant was issued for him. Joseph Tatterson’s car was sideswiped by a second vehicle. a Marion County complaint led to Floyd’s warrant. Also hospitalized are Winifred Dunn, 50, Clarksburg, Kenneth Stevens, 16, and Ross Ann Ford, 15, after a two car crash on U.S. Route 50 west of Grafton around midnight. Stevens’ car crossed the curve and struck Dunn’s vehicle. all three injured with head injuries and lacerations. Dunn’s car sustained multiple lacerations. two cars totaled about two thousand dollars in damage.
Parkersburg three Parkersburg Fire Department members were charged with grand larceny for thefts at Sears Roebuck. They faced arraignment in police court after an intensive probe. Police Chief Bruce Parsons said several thousand dollars in merchandise, including television sets, guns, and ammunition, were stolen and more arrests were anticipated with full fire department support.
The nation saw a high of 80 degrees in Laredo Texas on Sunday while Bemidji Minnesota reported a frigid 7 degrees. Forecasters caution of sharp temperature swings and variable regional conditions across the Midwest and Northeast.

Firemen of Grafton announced plans to bring in another supply of Christmas pines including Scotch Balsam and Spruce. Ten live trees remained at the station as Firemen Bill Johnson and Charles Duckworth left early today to secure additional trees.

A West Virginia Education Association delegates recommended spending an extra 15 million dollars next year for schools. About 6.5 million would raise the minimum foundation to 200 dollars per child, with 8.5 million for an incentive plan to raise local funding, higher salaries, more teachers, and more classrooms. The group also backed higher salaries for college instruction and urged stronger state funding to improve education. WV ranked 42nd nationally in school contributions with 17 dollars per student versus a 279 national average.
