The Essex county autopsy on the woman found in two potato sacks by Dias Creek Woods near Wildwood New Jersey concluded she was mummified and not burned. Medico criminologist Dr Harrison D Martland said she had not been shot or stabbed and the mystery deepened as more details emerged in the case.

Washington Pennsylvania December report says $1,000 disappeared from a teller's cage after a man visited the Citizen's National Bank carrying a wand with a bulb. Albert J. Allison, bank president, said the teller was in the vault and some customers claim the stranger poked the wand through grillwork and removed two packages of bills. A check-up confirmed the missing amount.
Cleveland December 16 A jury of seven women and five men convicted suspended police captain Michael J Harwood on multiple counts of taking bribes from bootleggers during the prohibition era The verdict stems from a grand jury probe led by Safety Director Elliot Ness who described a million dollar graft ring tying police to the under world during prohibition The jury deliberated about nine hours before returning the verdict on six or seven counts in the indictment
In Salem Virginia defense counsel said they would complete their case today for Hub Bard and Paul Duling West Virginians charged with the ambush slaying of Roanoke county deputy sheriff Clarence O Simmons last July 17. One state witness would be recalled for further questioning and rebuttal witnesses were expected. The defendants denied the killing and the state contends the brothers were in a parked car at a bar when the shooting occurred.
In Huntington on December 16 the Owens-Illinois Glass Company announced immediate start of construction on a two story engine plant costing 50000 as part of a 1500000 expansion program. The 50 by 140 foot building will use glass brick construction.
Washington December 16. Operators propose raising the miners work week from 35 to 40 hours after March 31 with no wage increase. An operators committee argues longer hours are needed to preserve wage structure and stabilize the industry amid oil gas and hydro electricity competition. Strike talk noted in labor circles as miners generally expected to seek 30 hour week or higher pay in the new wage agreement.
Assistant Prosecutor 8 N Friedberg said 15 year old John Blair will be charged with the shotgun slaying of F F Weiss, a 49 year old coal miner of War Hagle. Weiss died in his wife’s arms after murmuring Blair’s name as he fell. Blair was found at an aunt’s house after disappearing, and denied the shooting.
F P Johnson vice president of Missouri Pacific told senate investigators he kept accounts per his judgment of ICC rules and knew nothing about other firms in the Van Sweringen network. He said $3,200,000 listed as special deposits had been paid to creditors by another Van Sweringen firm. Continued on Page Five.
In a domestic relations courtroom Mrs. Virginia Bias won custody of her two young sons, drawing applause from a packed crowd. Grandparents Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Jenkins had earlier obtained custody after the father’s death, while Mrs. Bias argued the arrangement was temporary.
Charleston report says Okey Deboard former city policeman faces trial in intermediate court for the slaying of Leo Fizer 23 a former West Virginia University football star. Deboard missed an earlier trial date when counsel reported to Judge Collett Littlepage seeking a continuance.
The state senate approved a large unemployment compensation bill 28 to 1 amid plans to quickly enact the measure and consider gubernatorial appointments in executive session. Senator Earl H. Smith urged a committee to probe Chairman George Alexander of the liquor commission, citing protests from his county.
J Edgar Hoover labeled Merle Vanderbrush as public enemy number one. Vanderbrush, 29, a bank robber and kidnaping ally of Harry Brunette, was captured after a bomb and gun battle with Justice Department agents and police. Brunette, facing kidnapping and bank robbery charges, was moved to Trenton, New Jersey for detention.
