N L Myers 44 of Belington a veteran B and O brakeman and earlier Grafton traveler died at Davis Memorial Hospital after his left leg was nearly severed when a coal hopper rolled over it in Norton yards last night. Conductor L V Atha said Myers was setting brakes on a car when a jerk of the train threw him beneath the wheels. He was rushed to Elkins for treatment. Continued on page five.

He outlined a program featuring an adequate national defense, a strict policy of neutrality, and a universal law to equalize the burden of war.
Washington police seek two armed suspects after a 65 year old farmer Elwood Matthews was found shot in an apparent revenge killing connected to a penitentiary sentence. States' Attorney James Pugh quoted suspect W Joseph Kirby naming William Reed and Lawrence Gingell as accomplices. Matthews had testified for the state and the case involves a hold up in Charleston West Virginia.
Fire destroyed the Lambert building near Lamberton causing about 40000 in losses. Machinery valued at 25000 owned by H. L. Price Contracting Co was incinerated. West Union and St Marys firemen drew water from a pool to fight the blaze for over three hours and power lines were toppled plunging towns into darkness. The 20 plus year old concrete structure, built by Harry Lambert, stood as storage prior to the fire.
In Wildwood New Jersey coroners identified a woman found burned in seed potato sacks by bright red polish on her toes and fingers. The glass industry, led by Libbey-Owens-Ford and Pittsburgh Plate Glass, supplies about 90 percent of the nation’s plate glass used in auto production. The strike has been ongoing as workers seek higher wages.
Toledo reports Christmas bonus checks issued by Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass to employees who worked throughout 1936. Eligible hourly staff received 50 dollars. new hires got smaller amounts. Striking Ottawa plant workers were excluded per directors’ Dec 15 directive.
In Clarksburg on December 15 194? funeral services were held for James Caldwell an 18 year old Shinnston High school athlete killed when struck by an automobile State troopers charged Paul Pillo 22 as the driver investigators said Caldwell’s body lay in a ravine about 20 feet from the highway with a broken neck and the damaged car found 150 feet away from the scene.
President Roosevelt arrived in Charleston from a 28 day cruise to the Buenos Aires peace conference aboard the Indianapolis. He was greeted by Secretaries and Mrs James Roosevelt as rain fell and then left for a 12 hour drive to Washington amid cheering crowds.
In Enzefeld Austria on December 15 former King Edward VIII, living in self-imposed exile, is kept in bed by a severe headache. A redecorated chamber on Baron Rothschild’s estate is described as yellow blue and gold. Rumors say Mrs Wallis Simpson may join him. detectives guard the chateau as medicines are hurried from Baden. Mrs Wallis Simpson emerged from seclusion in a Riviera villa and traveled by car from Cannes with her host Mrs Herman Rogers and a detective. Mrs Rogers met officials at the United States consulate to discuss personal matters.
About 2,000 to 3,000 of UW Madison’s 8,000 students lined up to support President Glenn Prank as regents planned a special meeting to consider his resignation. The Madison Alumni Association protested the regents’ handling of the case.
The first case to test the taxing provisions under the unemployment insurance section of the federal Social Security Act was filed in the Supreme Court by George P. Davis, a Boston and Maine railroad stockholder. The suit challenges the constitutionality of title nine, which imposes an eight or more employer tax to fund the insurance. Davis appeals a district court ruling that upheld the tax and dismissed the bill.
Elizabeth Giltner, daughter of a Michigan State college dean, died by her own action in Mason Michigan county jail. She hanged herself with strips torn from her pajamas after fabricating a crude noose during the night. Slayer is death by own action Hope Morgan, who killed her best friend.
In Lansing Michigan on December 15 sheriff officials said 25 year old Hope Morgan hanged herself in a jail cell while awaiting a sanity commission. She left a scratched confession on magazine pages claiming jealousy over her best friend Elizabeth Giltner nearing marriage.
Huntington detention records show magistrate Tom Blenkenship extending a preliminary hearing for W. W. Hatfield a 34 year old junior high school teacher charged as a conspirator in a holdup. Prosecutor E E Winters Jr says Hatfield was one of three men who held up Morris Gilbert and stole $50.
Federal agents blasted an upper west side apartment during a 45 minute siege early today capturing 25 year old Harry Brunette and wounding his wife. Brunette, sought for kidnapping a New Jersey state trooper and bank robberies in the midwest, fought back with two pistols. The weapon engraved with a sheriff’s name was traced to a 1933 Michigan theft. Bellevue hospital reported the wife’s back wound not serious as residents woke to the gunfire. Continues on page seven.
Washington December 15 France joined the list of war debt defaulters with a note to R Walton Moore hoping negotiations may start later. Ambassador De Laboulaye cited distress from economic depression and world conditions as reasons for delaying proposals. Finland plans to pay its December 15 installment on schedule. Total dues today reach 155 million plus over 1.15 billion overdue on more than 12 billion debt.
