Scattered rain expected this afternoon and tonight with a high near 32 to 36. Monday ends with a low around 5 pm and a high near 32 to 36. Wednesday looks cloudy with a high near 46 and a low about 28, with a south portion experiencing rain. Early Tuesday morning around 1 am, the temperature drops to 39.
A Grafton man, Morgan Keller, 30, escaped with a cut forehead and the loss of his hat after accepting a ride with two unknown men. The trio headed toward town. a knife was drawn, money demanded, and Keller leaped from the moving car near the Fetterman intersection, reporting the incident to local police. The suspects fled, and authorities pursue the case.
Grafton post office braces for peak rush as Santa visits. Postmaster Loren A. Hoffman reports 10 000 pieces of mail cancelled on Monday and expects 35 000 to 40 000 items to be processed next Monday, marking the year’s busiest period.
An Ohio man, Sigmund Anderson 27 of Norde, employed by Staples Construction, was injured when his truck crashed on US Route 60 two miles west of Pruntytown. The vehicle hit a culvert and embankment, rolled over, and landed on its side after veering off the road. Police said damage reached about 1500 dollars and Anderson was taken to Grafton City Hospital for back injuries. In a second incident, a three car collision near Cozy Rest led to two drivers being arrested for hazardous driving and 600 dollars in damages. No injuries reported.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles told the 16 nation NATO Council that the United States still believes force is not the sole solution and urged continued military strength. He signaled readiness to fund Europe’s defense and preserve unity as NATO seeks to repair rifts over Middle East policy and other Cold War tensions.
Kiwanis members in Grafton plan an evening door to door light bulb sale starting about 7 30 p m to raise funds for needy children. President Dr William W Merow said a strong response could ensure a cheerful Christmas for local youngsters.
Sheriff Guy Cole reported that 28 pieces of property put up for non payment of taxes were sold to individuals during a courthouse sale. He added that 92 county real estate items went to the state when not bought by purchasers.
Fire Chief John Proctor said the Grafton Fire Department first searched multiple streets seeking a reported blaze at 512 Haislip Street. The fire was at 112 Hatslip Street, owned by Ray Hobart and rented by Bud White and family, caused by a overheated coal furnace chimney and cardboard used to close the fireplace. Damages estimated at 25 dollars. The department called for careful location reporting to avoid wasted time.
United Press reports aboard the first Operation Safe Haven plane carrying 15,000 Hungarian refugees to the United States, with the first batch due Wednesday. Among them Anna, a 19 year old from Budapest, speaks of fear and hope, hoping for a better future while avoiding publication of her full name.
The International Monetary Fund approved a $561 million loan and a standby $738,530,000 currency facility for Britain to bolster reserves during the Suez Canal crisis. A IMF spokesman said the funds are the largest ever advanced to a member country. Rep. Wayne Hays warned against using U.S. taxpayers to cover new foreign aid.
Logan Blair resident Corbett Ferrell Jr was held on a murder charge by State Police in connection with the death of his wife Betty Ruth 21 last Thursday. She died after being found in a hysterical condition near the couple's home about a mile from the house. Autopsy ordered after bruises were found on her head and chest. Sgt Hoge said the death resulted from violence. Ferrell was arrested for questioning Sunday night and will be arraigned later.

Also reports of a violent wind storm across the Middle West with gusts near 90 mph and a Cedar Rapids television tower incident.
United Press reports Hungarians staged a 48 hour general strike and a large battle north of Budapest as Soviet troops and tanks enforce martial law. Kadar rejects democratic reforms after four weeks of talks with the Budapest Central Workers Council. Moscow-backed forces push to crush the uprising as refugees flee toward Austria amid new minefield alerts.
PARKERSBURG two men were shot to death under mysterious circumstances at Marrtown Monday night. Victims identified as W. M. Sprouse 72 and Ira McConnell 25 were killed by 22 caliber bullets. Sprouse struck abdomen and McConnell chest and ear lobe. Mrs Sprouse heard shots after her husband went to investigate noises outside. Bodies lay about 12 feet apart. no guns found.
