Byrd urges $7.5 billion cut in federal spending
Senator Byrd released a 4000 word plan proposing a federal budget for the next fiscal year ending June 30 1951 with expenses of 36 billion and total federal outlays around 43.5 billion arguing reductions can be achieved by cutting non essential items and eliminating waste. He opposed higher taxes saying they would worsen a potential recession and warned of chronic deficits and rising national debt heading toward insolvency. He noted Truman’s budget will likely be higher and outlined three options for Congress including tax increases.

Clarksburg Man Dead From Self Inflicted Shotgun Wound
W. Malcolm Chorpening a 52 year old Clarksburg audi tor was found dead in the contractor A. B. Osborn's Harvey street office last night. Acting Coroner Charles D. Smith ruled death by self action after investigators noted a heart shot from a 16 gauge shotgun outside the building. Survived by wife Evelyn, he was a former employee of Roberts Hardware and Shingleton Brothers Fruit company.

Gasoline blending plant explosion injures four in Tulsa
A gasoline blending plant at the West Tulsa Refinery of the Texas Co. exploded last night, injuring four workers and causing about 1,000,000 dollars in damage. Victor J. Henkens was reported near death, as highly refined gasoline and oil from storage tanks leaped skyward and the blending plant with ten pumps was a total loss.

Northern Operators Stand Firm Against John L Lewis
In Charleston West Virginia northern coal operators pledged to support current industry negotiators with about 80 percent of the region's tonnage. A Webster County strip mine was closed by roving pickets after 300 union miners forced the halt at Sewell Coal's non union site near Webster Springs. Guards were posted as 65 workers left the disturbed operation, company officials said the mine would stay shut until Monday. A Fairmont meeting of the Northern West Virginia Coal Association issued a statement condemning John L. Lewis for unilateral action.

Police were called and they were discharged by publisher Mark Ethridge who called the stoppage illegal. The dispute arose from a new contract and executives then handled the late editions.

The Army reports Mel C. Moffitt of Hominy Oklahoma, serving since last March, was arrested after going AWOL to be with his German girlfriend and their baby near Grafenwoehr.
